Counselor’s Corner
Happy Spring KES families! It’s hard to believe we are in the last nine weeks of the school year! Our social emotional skill for the last nine weeks is relationship skills. We define that as a child’s consistent performance of socially acceptable actions that promote and maintain positive connections with others.
Modeling relationship skills can be an important part of the learning process for children. Some things that you can do to demonstrate relationship skills for your child include: Complimenting (them and others), showing appreciation, greeting people warmly, using manners, showing good sportsmanship, expressing concern, showing empathy and doing kind things for others. In addition to watching you model these behaviors, be sure to give them plenty of praise when they are engaging in these positive relationship building behaviors.
There are also several great books that you might share with your children as well that address relationship skills, here’s just a few examples: Have You Filled a Bucket Today? by Carol McCloud, Making Friends is an Art by Julia Cook, Amelia Bedelia by Peggy Parish, Stone Soup by Jon J. Muth and Swimmy by Leo Leonni. Playing games can be a good exercise in building relationship skills as well. Things like taking turns, using manners, being a good sport are all important components in relationship skills!
Remember that social emotional skills are just that…skills! The more opportunities your child has to practice, the more comfortable and confident they will be in building these lifelong skills!
Transportation Changes
When calling campus for a transportation change ensure to reach out before 2:30, after this time we cannot guarantee that messages will make it to classrooms during dismissal.
