Read Across America Day!

Today we celebrated the joy of reading on Read Across America Day! We celebrated by wearing mix-and-matched clothes, sporting wacky hair, and dressing as our favorite book character! We also participated in a school-wide "Drop Everything and Read" time! We spent the day reading favorite books from home and sharing our favorite stories with friends!

We are Entrepreneurs!

This week, we have been so busy designing, building, creating, collaborating, sharing, researching...and the list goes on! We have been so excited to learn more about how a business works, what goes in to the design and construction of a building or business and all of the things that a business has to sell!! We have had so much fun working on the PBL and will continue to finish the construction of our businesses next week! It has been so wonderful to hear the communication and conversations between the students as they work together to create their masterpiece! Looking forward to them sharing very soon!!

Optional Spelling Practice at Home!

We will work with these words for two weeks at a time. Feel free to practice these sorts at home! Also, I will not be giving spelling tests over these words this year, but rather check with each student by checking to see if they can spell the words based on their spelling patterns.

Repeated Sort: Students will sort their words. Then check their words using the answer key. Then sort their words again!

Draw and Label: Students choose 10 of their words. Then they will draw a picture of each world and label it.

Blind Sort: Using given guide words, or headers, students spell or write in words in the correct category as a partner calls each word aloud without showing it.

Writing Sort: Students write their words under the correct category.

Speed Sort: Students sort words quickly under the correct categories (use a timer to see how fast they can do it!) Students love to beat records and to set goals for themselves.

Word Hunt: Students hunt through their own reading and writing for words that are additional examples of the sound, pattern, or meaning unit they study!

Buddy Sort: Using the given headers, students sort their words with a partner, then discuss. They will then check their work with their answer key.

We are Learning

Reading

This week, we talked a lot about how second graders read a lot more in their heads and the voice they use when they read silently matters! They practiced reading pages of their book in their heads several times to make sure that they read them with voice that created meaning for them. They also practiced reading sentences fluently within their text and shared examples with the class.

Writing

We are moving onto learning about opinion writing. We will learn that writers may use one, some, or all of the following multiple strategies to persuade their reader act/feel/ or think certain ways (or, in this case, read a book we favor): describe a favorite character, infer character traits from what the illustrations tell us about them, retell a favorite part of the story, or forming their writing based on the estimated level of knowledge their audience may know about the subject (or book).

Word Study

Below are the sorts we will practice in class!!

Math

We are continuing our work with money. We are counting, finding equivalent sums, calculating, and shopping. These are fun things to practice with money at home as well!

We did a review this week of adding 2 and 3 digit number with regrouping. Please do a few with your child to make sure they are understanding when to regroup!

Social Studies

Second grade has been studying economics over the last weeks. We have deepened our understanding of goods vs. services, consumers vs. producers, needs vs. wants, and human, capital, and natural resources. We finished up our unit by rebuilding our town. What a fun day! I am sure some of you were really happy to see the 'businesses' coming through your door. (sorry). We came up with our business proposal, sketch, purchased items to add onto our business and created additional info sheets. Such a great day.
