The Week at a Glance
Weekly Concept: On the Move
Essential Question: What can help you go from here to there?
Next week our class will be reading stories about the transportation used to take people from place to place. Children will learn about how families in the past traveled and how these vehicles compare with what is used today.
Here are some activities that you can do with your child to help reinforce the skills we will be practicing.
Word Workout
Vocabulary: transportation, vehicle
Discuss the different kinds of transportation you take from place to place. Then invite your child to draw pictures of each type of transportation.
My Words to Know
High-Frequency Words: here, me
Write the words here and me and ask your child to write each word. Think of sentences that use each word, then read the sentences together.
Category Words: vehicles
Play “Guess the Vehicle.” Give rhyming clues about different kinds of vehicles. Encourage your child to guess the vehicle, and then act out how it is used.
Phonics: j, qu
Have your child guess words that begin with the letter j. Give a clue and act out each word. When your child guesses the word, write the word on a chart. Repeat for qu.
Comprehension: character, setting, plot
Have your child choose a favorite story and then read it together. Ask your child questions about the main characters, setting, and plot. Invite your child to draw pictures about the characters, setting, and plot.
North to Alaska!
Today I bid a fond farewell to the KinderKids. I did so with a heavy heart; but with much excitement. I am headed to Alaska as part of my bid to become the 2018 Iditarod Teacher on the Trail. As part of the selection process, I will interview with a selection committee, will present all of the exciting ways we've been learning about the race in the classroom, AND I'll get to experience the start of the race in Fairbanks. Your child has probably mentioned that the race start had to be moved from the Anchorage area to Fairbanks due to a lack of snow.
If you are interested in reading my blog about my Alaskan adventures over the summer, I invite you to go to

Mrs. Hertel will be your child's guest teacher. She is wonderful and has been in our classroom before while I've been at conferences. Please do not look for an online newsletter next Friday, as I will be off the grid, so to speak. I'll look forward to updating you upon my return. Wish me luck!
The Great Outdoors
While the students await my return to follow the Iditarod race (it will still be going strong when I get back, because remember...it's 1,049 miles long), they will be learning about animals in their own area. They will be learning about deer, owls, raccoons, and frogs. Be sure to look for writings that I have planned for them to do them next week.
Presidents Day
In honor of Monday's Presidents Day, we've done many activities with the presidents...more specifically President Abraham Lincoln and President George Washington. Be sure to ask your child about the book George Washington's Breakfast. Ask your child who the main character, George Allen, had to practice the LifeSkill of Perseverance.
Math Facts
As many students have moved from addition to subtraction, please make sure your child is getting nightly practice with these facts. I can assure you that passing these timed tests are difficult--if not impossible--to do without your help at home. Remember, you will never regret the time spent devoted to your child's education.
Basket Bash
In today's folder, you will find information about the LES PTO's biggest fundraiser, the Basket Bash. This event would not be possible without donations from parents like you. We are wanting to put together an amazing basket for this exciting night held in April. Be sure to check it out. Thank you in advance for your donation!
Jump Rope for Heart
We had a fantastic time participating in Jump Rope for Heart. To those of you who allowed your child to obtain pledges, we thank you!
