LCE News From Mrs. Blaney
November, 2019
"Gnight, November. Come in from the cold. We're making hot cocoa with WHOLE milk: we're bold. CHILL, November. CHILL.” ― Lin-Manuel Miranda
November has ended already! There were only 15 school days in November, and the rush to 2020 continues. This newsletter summarizes some of the events of the month and previews what will come up in December. I will also share some helpful resources with you.
Giving: Lions Really Care
LCE's Lions Really Care Club collected donations of Halloween candy and other items for Operation Gratitude this month. Lions Really Care Club is open to students of all ages and their parents!

Giving: Jog a Thon
The LCFEF held its annual Jog a Thon in November. LCE raised $31,000 in donations, and 38.9% of families registered! November 30 is the last day to participate. The school with the highest participation gets $500. We are currently in 2nd place! It's not too late!

Giving: Book Donations
Once Upon a Time Bookstore donated $1,000 in books to honor LCE's former librarian, Kay Bahrami. Librarian Billie Melillo chose the books.

Friendship
Mrs. Durfee and Mrs. Brown were spotted enjoying the beautiful weather and sharing lunchtime together. I'm grateful for this staff who cares about one another and finds ways to show it.
Challenge Success
What are some strategies for long term success? It's less about the grades and more about the big picture. Denise Pope explains in this short video.

How Do We Help Students Understand Bullying?
By modeling inclusion, kindness, and acceptance, the LCE staff helps students daily. When there is a problem, we rely on students to recognize the problem, use tools to solve it if they can (like Kelso's Choices), and get the support of an adult. The adult will help the students understand if a behavior could be an example of bullying - if it is a repeat behavior, if it is severe, and/or if it is the result of an imbalance of power. This is a great resource if you wish to learn more.
Math Resource
The lcusd.net website has helpful videos for some of the procedures our students are learning in Everyday Math (K - 5th). You should be receiving a Family Letter or becoming aware of what is coming up in Math class.
Social Emotional Learning
Teachers will be receiving further training in the month of December from the Institute for Social and Emotional Learning. In August, we learned about Social Emotional Competencies. Be sure to check out the Family Learning Series event on December 10 (see details below).
Interesting Article
This article is all about why students might misbehave and how adults can help.
Book Recommendation
The Price of Privilege is my recommendation for this month. The author, Madeline Levine, is well respected by our district's leadership as an expert on clinical psychology and education. Levine is one of the founders of Challenge Success.
