Week 2, T3 2022
5/8/22 - He Pānui Wiki Rua, Whānga Tuatoru
Tēnā koutou katoa (hello everyone)
Kia ora from Rarimu. I have been lucky enough to spend 3 days away with the Year 5&6 students on their winter camp. It has been awesome to see how engaged and excited everyone is. The parents who were willing and able to come on this camp have made all the difference - you are an awesome bunch to be away with and the team thank you all very much - a special shout out to Amie Irwin for running things in the kitchen. Thanks to everyone back at school for holding the fort while we have all been away.
Values Focus This Week
Our time at the Blue Mountain Adventure Centre camp has been a wonderful example of 'Ako'. There has been so much reciprocal teaching & learning happening this week which highlights the importance of giving our children these camp experiences. Students have worked alongside adults to participate in a range of activities that have added to our 'life kete' of learnings. We even had a group giving Mrs Douglas ski lessons on Thursday :). Everyone will be tired when they get home this evening - some of that camp story-sharing might need to wait until Saturday.
Everyone has been super well behaved, quiet and settled at night and have managed themselves to a high standard - awesome to see, you have been a wonderful group of students to take away. Thanks to Mrs Douglas, Miss Peterson & Mrs Corkill for the time and effort they have put into planning and running the camp. Thank you to whānau for digging deep to make this camp happen for our Year 5&6 students - we acknowledge it's an expensive exercise but when you see what the kids are getting out of it, it all seems worthwhile. Please keep an eye out for the upcoming camp review during the term - we would love as many responses as possible.
Jump Jam Competition
Wahoo - well done to our Jump Jam teams. The senior team took out 1st place and the junior team, 3rd place at the competition held at Wairarapa College on Thursday evening. You all practiced hard and performed super well - we are so proud of the way you represented Gladstone School. A huge thanks to Mrs Hooper for leading and coaching both teams.
BoT (Board of Trustees) Declaration - Results
We were lucky to have 3 nominations put forward for the 3 parent rep places and 1 nomination for the staff position on the BoT. This means we do not need to go to a vote. We are delighted to announce that Rebecca Tosswill; Jacqui Wilkinson & Roanna Reidy are coming onto the BoT as our parent representatives and are equally delighted that Graham Brown will continue on as our Staff Representative. A huge thanks to all of you for putting your hands up to help govern our school.
Assembly
Well done to James Hanson & Tom Nicol who are our stars of the week - awesome leadership and kaitaki of our junior students. A big congratulations to the following students who received syndicate awards: Lyra Alexander; Nicolas Francis; Genevieve Taylor; Darcy Berryman; Henry McKay; Patrick Quirke; Roczen Nolan; Jay Kawana-Reid; Madden Davies & Hadleigh Webb. We are really proud of your efforts.
Thank you to everyone who has been able to help at, bake or donate for the FoGS catering at the Complex Quiz this evening - a special thanks to Hayley Quirke for overseeing the organisation of this important fundraiser. Sadly the teaching team will be giving up their bottom of the table place at the quiz - dates didn't line up this year. We look forward to being back next year. Enjoy the evening if you are heading along & remember to pop your Complex Membership through, every membership is greatly appreciated by the committee - membership forms below.
Have a great weekend everyone.
Ngā manaakitanga,
Belinda

Please also let the teaching team know if you need to book either a face to face or zoom interview outside of these meeting times.

South Wairarapa Year 7&8 Kāhui Ako/Life Education Initative
The South Wairarapa Kāhui Ako have been working closely with Life Education Trust to try and deliver real, informative information on vaping. Vaping continues to be a problem for our young people at secondary school and beyond. The idea is that schools try to help prevent students taking up the habit in the first place.
Students will be attending a workshop called 'Behind the Scenes, which is a Theatre in Education performance focussing on vaping and social media influences @ Greytown School @9:30 am on Thursday 18 August - we will be travelling by bus (the cost of the bus is being funded by the Principal's Association). Parents are encouraged to attend the performance with their young person; however they and all students will need to wear a mask indoors.
Our educator Laura Wood will then deliver a “Vape Truths” workshop on Friday 19 August @10:15 am @Gladstone School.
Life Education Trust is also offering a whānau webinar on Monday 22 August @7pm where members of our community can join a zoom link, hosted live by Laura, that provides educational information and discussion we hope will generate conversations at home too.
Student Toilet Upgrade
The Ministry of Education has been working alongside the BoT to start a student toilet upgrade for Gladstone School that includes a compliant accessible bathroom. We have been advised that this work will be starting on Monday the 15th of August. In the next few days a portable toilet facility will be moved onto the school site and positioned over by the tennis court. We will lay down all weather matting to ensure that access is mud-free. It is anticipated that the project will take approximately 4-6 weeks to complete.
Once the temporary toilet facility is in place we will talk to students about the use of it.
The current toilet block is being gutted. If anyone would like any of the following items they need to let Belinda know before next Friday the 12th of August by emailing principal@gladstone1.school.nz

Scarecrow Fair Monster Auction - Coordinator Needed Urgently
We are desperate for someone to put their hand up to oversee and co-ordinate the Monster Auction. Other people will be sourcing the prizes so the role is co-ordinating the prize packages and liaising with the auctioneer. Please contact Belinda if you think you could help us out this year.
