Our Star Achievers this Week

Big picture

A word from Mr Broom.

We've had a wonderful week in school. It's been Science week and the children have been mixed up right across school to complete some wacky science experiments. They really have had a wonderful time and it's been lovely to see the children work together so well.

Unfortunately, we had to deal with quite a nasty altercation on our playground but not between the children! We take any display of anti-social behaviour very seriously and I have taken steps to ensure that this does not happen again. I'd like to thank our wonderful parents and staff who were there to quickly take control of the situation before it escalated. Let's hope that this isolated incident is now well and truly over.

To finish on a positive, words do not do justice to the excellent behaviour we are seeing from our children in and around school. They truly are fantastic and make us all very proud.

Have a lovely week ahead.

NSPCC Danceathon

During Friday's Sports Relief events, we completed the NSPCC Danceathon by taking part in sporadic flash dancing. We had a real blast!

For those of you who have completed sponsor forms, please bring in the money on Monday. Thank you.

Slight Change of School Times for September - See Separate Letter

As I mentioned in a previous newsletter, we have recently appointed a sports coach (Mr Wooffindin) who will be working with all our children in his new role. To assist this and also to provide consistency across the school, we have decided to slightly change the start times and procedures from September, for our Reception through Year 6 classes. Nursery will remain unchanged.

These are as follows:

Children will line up on the playground at the start of the school day at 0840.

The class teacher/adult will then lead the children into school for registration which will take place at 0845. Children will be considered late if they arrive after this time. They will then need to report to the office with their parent.

The school day will end for Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 at 1505.

The school day will end for Years 3 to 6 at 1510. This will allow for parents to collect children in differentyear group phases.

A separate letter detailing these changes will also be distributed.

SATs Dates

The Key Stage 2 testing period for our Year 6 children will be week commencing Monday 14th May, Key Stage 1 testing for our Year 2 children takes place throughout May, and Phonics screening for our Year 1 children (and some Year 2 children) takes place week commencing 11 June. If you have a child in Year 2 or Year 6, please make sure you don't book any term time holidays during this period. It's really important to them and us that they are in school to take the SATs assessments. Thank you.

Helpers for our Sandpit Needed!

You may have seen the huge bags of sand in our car park - it's for the sand pit in our outdoor area and we are hoping that some of our parents / carers would be able to help us move it! If you are able to help between 1.00 pm and 2.00 pm on Monday 26th, Tuesday 27th or Wednesday 28th March please come along (if you have a wheelbarrow you could bring along as well that would be most helpful!)

We have another special lunch scheduled for later this term. Please see below:

Wednesday 28 March - Reception - Easter Lunch

It's important that children attend school regularly and at Sherburn Hungate we recognise that excellent attendance leads to excellent achievement. Fact!

Congratulations to our Year 6 children who are our attendance champions in school this week with 100%! Our average attendance this week is 96.6%. Well done everyone!

As you can see below, our attendance in most classes is above the national average which is fantastic. Thank you for your support on this.

We have a small number of children whose attendance is well below the national expectations. These children are known as persistently absent when their attendance falls below 90%. I will be making telephone calls to parents of these children.

Thank you for your continued support with our attendance drive. It is really appreciated.

Bikes/Scooters - Not on the Playground

A polite reminder that should children bring bikes/scooters to school, they must not be ridden on the school playground or footpaths for health and safety reasons.
