The Cloud Connection
April 7, 2014
Math: We'll be learning about the relationship between fractions and decimals this week. There will be homework on Mon. and Wed. Friday we'll play some math games.
Reading: Students will continue practicing their story for our storytelling unit this week. It's very important that students are practicing at home so they get comfortable with their story. I'm hoping to have our storytelling festival the week of the 21st.
Language: We'll be writing our own pieces this week and we'll learn some research techniques as we begin our marine invertebrate research unit.
Social Studies: If time allows we'll begin learning about the Southcentral Region of Alaska.
Science: This week I'd like to introduce students to the concept of forest succession and life between the tides.
Other items: Students did a great job with their SBA tests. Most everyone used their time well and put forth their best effort during the tests. Your support with yummy treats made a huge difference. Thank you to everyone who brought great food to share. Tuesday is our last day of testing.
Students should be reading for their weekly reading logs. Our next book report is due April 28th. Students need to select an Alaskan survival story (either fictional or informational) to read. Eventually they'll be creating a diorama of their book. I've included the diorama information in this newsletter.
Please get the permission slips signed that I sent home last week! We'd also like to collect the camp fee by next week. Please let me know if you need assistance in payment of the $70. As you can tell we'll be very busy between now and the end of the year! If you can volunteer for any of our excursions please check the boxes and let me know so I can plan accordingly. I am still in need of chaperones/drivers for some of our in town trips. Without your support we won't be able to do all of these great trips. I will be sending home an additional slip to go to the Homer Family Theater on April 29 to see the Disney Hallo Bay Bear movie. This will cost $5 (but the price includes a popcorn and a drink.) A naturalist will be addressing the school about bear behavior and bear safety.
I'm asking students to choose an art piece this week for the Art Fair to be held May 2. They can use something they've created at home or school this year as long as it's been created entirely by themselves.
Thank you for supporting the student council fundraiser for the Animal Shelter. Our class raised over $140.
A flier went home about spring pictures last week. These will take place April 16th. I believe that pictures need to be purchased prior to the 16th.
I'll be out of the building Thurs. and Fri. for district curriculum meetings. Mrs. Gribble will be in charge.
Please check the events below so you can plan accordingly. May is looking equally busy!
Select a book of your choice that is around 100 pgs. at your reading level. Read the book and as you are reading be thinking of a scene or setting that is important to your story.
When you’ve finished the book you’ll need to recreate an important scene from the book inside of a box or make a paper box like we did for our snow scenes. The scene needs to be completed in a 3-D effect with objects in the foreground as well as the background. The walls and back of the box need to be decorated as part of the scene. Create objects, use found objects, or similar objects to depict the scene from the book.
You also need to include a written portion for your report. You will read this with wonderful expression when you share your report with the class. In your written portion please include the title of the book, the author of the book, your name and the importance of the scene you chose to share. Give us just enough of a summary of this part of the book to make us want to read the rest of the story.
You will be graded on all three parts of this presentation.
