The progressing of Thanksgiving Break...
Return of the Sub Folder
Email sent on Monday 11/13
Rational for the change:
· This year POD Leaders began to take on the responsibility of addressing the need of substitute materials. We are moving back to a sub folder system, to ensure we have a streamline system and all teachers are ready to start their day of teaching.
Morning time is one of the busiest times of the day and the most crucial when decisions need to be made with purpose and urgency.
Sub folders contain: (see visual)
- Split List
- Seating Chart
- Letter to Substitute (for example, may include student leaders or location of materials in the classroom
- Standing assignment (this assignment is a generic assignment that can be used in the event of an emergency. This assignment is to have value as it reviews for example, key concepts, skills, and/ or academic vocabulary
- Current work assignments (if you have an approved absence or the day before there is a 50% chance you will absent- update the folder in the front office with the current assignment)
Deadline date Monday, Nov. 27th. Thank you to everyone who turned them in before Thanksgiving Break. We did not have time to discuss in Staff meeting.
Have you filled a Bucket Today?
Happy Friday ARSA Rangers,
The Empowerment Team would like to encourage all staff to acknowledge and recognize one another in an effort to "Fill a Teacher's Bucket." By giving each other kind, caring, and uplifting words, we can build a more positive environment and culture at Ann Richards.
How will this work?
- Each teacher will have a paper bucket outside their door in a page protector. These were put into your boxes yesterday. Please write you name on the line provided, feel free to beautify it, and tape it up next to your door leaving the opening free of tape (that's where your drops will be put in). (see example)
- When we return from break, drops can be found next to the bioclock, in the main office, and in all three counselor suites.
- Drops will be a cutout of a water drop where you can write a line or two to someone you'd like to recognize. The recipient name must be on the drop since our wonderful office aides will help deliver drops or you can choose to deliver the drop yourself.
One more way to show your support and encouragement could be to visit a colleague’s class, in another discipline, in same discipline, in another grade, in same grade, best would be a variety for 10 minutes twice a month. Our Support Team, may want to visit each other's areas of swap out 10 minutes in "each other's shoes" to get a sense of your colleagues day.
The purpose of the visit would be twofold: one, to learn new techniques, ideas, inspiration and two, to praise a colleague and fill out a water drop for their bucket.
This initiative would promote good morale and comradery as well as learning from trade secrets, so to speak, from our ARSA team.
The idea stems from a book called, Have You Filled a Bucket Today? that shows the effects of expressing appreciation. Here is a link for other questions you may have about "Filling a Bucket." http://www.bucketfillers101.com/faqs.php
Let's lift each other up and finish out the first semester strong!

Spotlight on Ms. Burns - LEAD
Ms. Burns is the greatest POD leader there is. POD 8A confers that she is the reason for all of our efficiency and innovation. Ms. Burns gives us google docs, split lists, information, direction, and motivation before we even think to ask. She also takes the ball and runs with all of our ideas to motivate and congratulate our students for their success at ARSA.
She is the Best!
Spotlight on Thanksgiving Luncheon Committee
The committee work tirelessly to ensure that the staff had a fantastic experience from the food, smiles, and decor. I thank them tremendously for coordinating everything and giving everyone a time to sit, relax, and enjoy one another over phenomenal food!
Spotlight on Mr. Pharms - TEAM. LEAD
No matter the day of the week or the time of day, no matter if he is tired or at his best, Mr. Parhms is always kind and encouraging! He is always helpful. He has a certain amount of grit that goes unnoticed and i just want our ARSA family to know he works hard all of the time, he’s consistent, he’s helpful and just an all great teammate! Kudos to you and keep truckin toward
Spotlight on Ms. Williams - Sanders - LEAD
I want to spotlight the hard work of Ms. Williams-Sanders as a novice Teacher! She is intentional in planning and delivering aligned instruction where students have opportunities designed to promote discourse. Students enjoy the learning that is taking place in ELAR 7 because educators like William- Sanders!
Spotlight on 7th Grade ELAR - LEAD
I would like to highlight the 7th grade ELAR team. They have really come together to get the writing scores to the masters level. The whole team has worked to ensure that all students in 7th grade will have success. Mrs. Takats, Ms. Parambath, and Ms. Horne have spent countless hours after school sharing insights and materials with the whole group. They also made sure I was able keep the students in the vacant 7C position on an equal playing level with all other 7th graders. They were patient in showing the steps that gave them success in the past (breaking down the prompt, brainstorming bubbles, etc.) so that all 7th grade students will be exceptional readers and writers.
Spotlight on Ms. French -
Ms. Nix writes:
Ms. French has had a transformative mindset this year. This year she is going above and beyond basic responsibilities to ensure that her students are successful. I admire her work ethic and dedication to student achievement. Whenever I give her feedback, she takes the feedback and immediately applies it in her instruction. Great job Ms. French! You are becoming the teacher I knew you could be!
I would like to spotlight the efforts and attitude of our Social Studies teachers. They have a perseverance and determination to grow as educators. We are asking the team to reflect on their practice, think differently, and then change behavior in how we teach students the concepts within a very abstract subject.
From 8th grade - incorporating more reading with annotation, providing more opportunity for student discourse. 7th Grade team is new to TX History and Mr. Pharms and Mr. Stegall are being discerning, diligent, and building relationships with scholars. Sixth grade team are designing more opportunities for students to interact collaboratively with the content; making stronger connections with their learning.
We are not where we want to be as of yet, but it is clear that we are all working to improve our practice and we are seeing growth in our student performance. After 2nd CA, each grade level results indicated over 35% of students at Meets and above. Kudos team ---moving in the right direction!!
