Phillips Prep IB Approach to STEM and Project-Based Learning
Why Design?
PPS STEM
The Design Cycle in action: Investigate, Plan, Create, Evaluate. Prospective students recently engaged in a STEM-focused Open House. PPS hosted an IB STEM by Design Night for current 5th graders and their parents on October 15th. The event was offered to share information about our IB Program, Design Classes, and STEM project-based activities. Participants visited various stations including Virtual Reality, Video Production, and Robotics. It was a fun night of learning that allowed our teachers and student ambassadors to demonstrate how Phillips weaves STEM and the engineering design process into all disciplines. Article from Space.com by Robert Z. Pearlman -
Two NASA astronauts have made history conducting the first all-female spacewalk, and did so using a spacesuit that shares a connection to the first U.S. woman to walk in space 35 years ago this month. Christina Koch and Jessica Meir worked outside of the International Space Station on Friday (Oct. 18) to replace a power controller that failed the week before. The malfunction interrupted a series of scheduled spacewalks to upgrade the station's exterior-mounted batteries.Koch and Meir began their history-making spacewalk at 7:38 a.m. EDT (1138 GMT) as they switched their extravehicular mobility units (EMUs, or spacesuits) to internal power. Global STEM
From The Irish Times by Marie Boran
Global Math Week officially ended on October 17th, but that doesn’t mean teachers and their classes can’t have fun with the activities on the Global Math Project website. The introductory video on the Exploding Dots game promises to show us the math we thought we knew but “in a brand new, astounding light.” It essentially gamifies and deconstructs the notion of a base in math, working up from base 2 (the binary system used in computing) to base 10 (the decimal system) and beyond. There’s also a section of the website called RAMD or random acts of mathematical delight. These are videos or activities designed to make math a bit more fun, like converting your name into a polynomial equation. Visit the site at: https://globalmathproject.org/.
