Staying Engaged at School

Does your child sometimes daydream during class?

Is your child often bored when listening to a lecture or presentation?

Does your child have a hard time remembering what they learned?

  • If you answered yes to any of these questions, try to help your child work on being more engaged during class.

Having good attendance is the first step to being successful in school. But just showing up isn’t enough. Being engaged during class is also very important. When a student is engaged, they are more likely to learn, remember and be interested in what is being taught in their classes.

Tips For Staying Engaged During Class to Share with Your Child(ren)

  1. Come to class alert and ready to learn

    1. It is hard to be engaged in class when you are tired and hungry. Try to get at least 8 hours of sleep and wake up early enough to eat a good breakfast.

    2. Have all of your homework done.

    3. Eliminate distractions - turn off or put away your cell phone

  2. Take Notes

    1. When you take notes, you are focusing your mind on what is being taught in your class. Taking notes, helps you to focus and having good notes to study from is an added bonus. To make notes more interesting, try alternating between different colors of pens and highlighters.

  3. Watch your body language

    1. Sit up straight and look at your teacher when he/she is speaking. If you act interested and engaged, you may find that you feel more interested and engaged.

  4. Participate

    1. Ask/answer questions and engage in discussion happening inside your classroom.
