News and Announcements

Return to Sports Guidelines Updated

The California Department of Public Health made significant updates to its guidelines for youth and high school sports today, paving the way for counties and school districts to start planning for multiple sports in the coming days and weeks, including high school football if certain health conditions and safety protocol are met.

The state health agency adjusted its colored tier system for youth and high school sports to allow outdoor, high-contact sports such as football, water polo and soccer to be played in the less restrictive red (substantial risk) or purple (widespread risk) tiers in the state’s COVID-19 monitoring system with conditions. The sports had previously slotted in the orange tier (moderate risk).

Starting Feb. 26, the outdoor, high-contact sports can be played in the lower tiers in counties with an “adjusted case rate equal to or less than 14 per 100,000” and with regular weekly testing for athletes and coaches. LA County is currently at 20 per 100,000 which gets updated weekly.

And while outdoor volleyball was also moved to the red tier from the orange, the update didn’t appear to provide much relief for indoor sports such as basketball, indoor volleyball and wrestling, which remain in the most difficult to reach tier, yellow, if contested inside.

WELCOME TO THE MUSTANG FAMILY

Please join us in welcoming our new swim coaches! We are excited to introduce Jessica Argelander & Joe Ciatti. Both have collegiate swimming backgrounds and a passion for coaching at the high school level. Welcome to Walnut High School!

Peer Counseling 2021-2022 Apps out now!

WHS Peer Counseling is now accepting applications on the school website for 2021-2022 Peer Counselors. Applications can be found on the WHS website peer counseling page HERE and are due Friday, March 12.

Peer Support is offered by our WHS Peer Counselors who are students who have been trained to listen. They are fellow students who will not tell you how you should feel. They are willing to listen and go through issues with you.

Our WHS Peer Counselors have training in how to talk with students without judging. They understand that confidentiality is the most important part of what they do. Peer Counselors will keep what you say private unless there is a risk of suicide, self-injury, child abuse, or a danger that you will hurt someone else.

Peer Counseling is not a club and represents a diverse group of WHS students. In fact, most Peer Counselors do not know each other when the year begins. This group of students only exists to support their fellow students during difficult times.

Parent Survey for Next School Year

We are continuing to monitor the ever-changing fluid information and guidance from various agencies (state and LA County Public Health, state and local educational agencies). We do not yet know if or when we will reopen schools this spring due to state and local public health guidelines. The County remains in the “Widespread” (Purple Tier) in relation to COVID-19 infections. We will continue to keep you informed for the remainder of this school year and the new school year.

WVUSD is surveying all parents for the Reopening of Schools for August 9 (the first day of school) for the 2021-2022 school year. The purpose of the survey is to prepare for student scheduling and staffing needs for the next school year. This is not a binding answer. This survey is simply to gather initial responses.

Please click on the link below to fill out the survey. Your responses will help shape our instructional programs for the next school year.

2021 - 2022 AP OPEN INTEREST FORM

In AP, students have the opportunity to take a college-level course and potentially earn college credit, saving both time and money. AP not only helps students to be better prepared for college, it builds confidence and introduces them to concepts and skills that will be useful for the rest of their lives.

Walnut High has an OPEN ACCESS policy which means any student meeting course prerequisites may choose to sign up for one or more of the 25 AP courses currently offered. Because seats are limited, students meeting minimal qualifications may be placed on a waiting list. Approval is tentative and does not guarantee placement in the course due to seating and course availability.

The application process is easy. Watch the video below and make sure you know your student ID, GLC, and grades for prerequisite courses.

  • Students are not allowed to record without teacher permission.
  • New legislation (AB 77) states that if a student is absent 3 days in the week, the parent will be contacted to support the student to re-engage with Distance Learning.
  • Normal grading policy begins the first day of school. Teachers will cover their grading policy in their syllabus as well as in their Back to School Night presentation.
  • More information regarding Distance Behavioral Expectations is located below .

WVUSD Distance Learning Behavioral Expectations for Students

Students at all levels are now engaging in Distance Learning. To ensure a positive, productive and enjoyable learning experience for all participants, it is important that all students and parents/guardians adhere to these Distance Learning Expectations, which include online behaviors for students and privacy guidelines for parents.

ATTENDANCE COUNTS!

Please remember that attendance counts, every period, every day. Students will be marked absent if they are not on camera at the beginning of each period to verify their attendance.

If your student is having difficulty logging in, please contact your teacher immediately, and remember to clear their attendance by the end of the day.

All single-period absences will need to be reconciled through the attendance office by the student. If marked absent, students will receive an email from the attendance office notifying them that they have been marked absent. The notification will include the date and period of the absence. The student will need to contact the Attendance Department to make any necessary corrections to their individual period attendance. For full-day absences, a parent/guardian must contact the attendance office by the end of the day.

We are so happy to see all of our students online and learning. They are working hard and making us proud. Keep up the great work!
