Island of the Dolls
The Legend of the Island of the Dolls
Located in Mexico City, Mexico, the Island of the Dolls is one of the creepiest places in the world. This island is located in the canal of Xochimilco. According to the legend of the island, there was a young girl who had drowned. The caretaker of the island named Don Julian Santana Barrera had found the girl. After trying very hard to save her, Julian could not bring her lifeless body back to life. Shortly after, a doll floated up to the surface of the water. Thinking the doll belonged to the girl, he took it and hung it on a tree near the canal to respect the spirit of the girl. Soon after, Julian believed that the island was haunted by the dead girl and in order to keep her spirit calm, he collected more and more dolls and hung them on trees. Not too long after, Julian realized that the dolls were all possessed by spirits of dead girls so he continued to collect these dolls and place them all over the island. 50 years later, Julian was found dead. He had drowned in the same spot as the girl. Some people who had traveled around the island in boats had said that dolls moved their arms, legs, heads, and even opened and closed their eyes. Other people have said that they heard the dolls whispering to each other and calling them to come on the island.
