Whiz Kids Tutoring
Soma Community Church started a faith-based tutoring program with the hope of making a difference in the lives of under-privileged children who are struggling academically. We are excited to continue our partnership with Moreau Heights Elementary.
Our Mission: To help improve the lives of elementary students through academic tutoring, positive mentoring and spiritual nurture.
What is Whiz Kids?
A one-on-one tutoring program that meets weekly for an hour of tutoring and 30 minutes of “Club Time” We also plan activities such as attending LU games, bowling and end of year carnival. In the last 3 years we have seen a lot of success with the one on tutoring.
What do we need from you?
Once you have identified a student that could use Whiz Kids we ask you to fill out the form. (Heather Nelson has extras). Once you have filled that out and return to Heather, Soma does the rest. We accept completed forms throughout the year.

Book Study Highlight
Read this article and reflect on:
- How is this similar to or different from my experiences in the classroom?
- Does this help me to better understand the needs of some of your students?
- What can you do to support the extreme needs of some students that will benefit all students?

We begin iReady benchmark testing next week. Be sure to schedule adequate time to allow your students to do their best on both the reading and the math assessments so you have a clear picture of their current skill-set.
Here are a few helpful links as you prepare yourself AND your students for iReady testing!

How can we motivate students?
Plan to work on the tests in short sessions:
K-1: 30-40 minutes total, 2-3 testing periods, 15-20 minutes each
Grades 2-5: 45-60 minutes total, 2 testing periods, 25-30 minutes each
Breakfast in the Classroom
When we have a small "mess" that needs to cleaned we will have 2 choices:
1. You may use the wipes provided by families from your school supply list.
2. You may use the cleaning spray and paper towels that you WILL be provided by Jon. Teachers will be the only "sprayers" and students can wipe with paper towels.
If you have questions, see Sue or Dawn.

PBIS
We had our first PBIS meeting this week. If there are big things to share we will post them in a PBIS section.
Attendance
This Friday we will have our first bracket winners. The winners will be announced at the end of the day on Friday. We will also announce the top 3 classes with the highest attendance percentage for the week. Starting next week there will be a picture in the SMORE of the bracket with the first round winners.
Restroom
Please remember that if you send a student to the restroom with a pass, we are expecting you to stand in the hallway to monitor the student. There have been a lot of students in the hallway for restroom with no staff at doors monitoring. This is a building wide expectation for ALL students.
Morning Meeting
Morning meeting is looking fantastic across the board. Please make sure that students are NOT leaving the room during morning meeting, even for the restroom. They should be in the room participating in the lesson the entire time. If you have feedback for morning meetings or the lesson plans, please let your PBIS grade level representative know. This is something we will go over at our monthly meeting.
We wanted to clarify a few pieces from the feedback we received from our recent PBIS meeting this week. The activity piece must remain the same across the board. The greeting and sharing can be changed up if you want. You still MUST do both pieces, but if you want to pick your own greeting or your own share questions, please feel free to do that! You don't have to, you can use exactly what's in the plans, but if you want to get creative, go for it!
Committees
Committee meetings have started! If you haven't checked the document to see what committee you are on, you can find it here: Committee List
Please check the calendar and read this newsletter each week so you know when your committee is meeting. You are expected to attend committee meetings. If you are unable to attend please contact Sue or Dawn.
Make sure you share information from meetings with your colleagues. It's important that we are communicating things back and asking for input. We will be sharing meeting notes each with in our Charger News as well. If you have a question about something, utilize the committee list above to see who is on that committee that you can talk to about your questions or concerns.
SMART Boards
Please make sure the SMART board is turned off when you are not using it or you leave the room. It's also good to periodically clean the filter. This is super easy. If you need help learning how to do this let me or Jill Lemons know and we'd be happy to help.
Huddles
I love participating in our first staff huddle last Friday! It's so important that we work to support each other. No one can do it alone and there's a whole team of people here ready to help when you need it. Please don't hesitate to reach out to someone when you need help. There is a great article link below regarding self-care.
