Collegiate Academy at TCC Northeast
September 20, 2020
Phoenix Family,
Reminder: Collegiate Academy is in session on Monday, September 21! Transportation and Nutrition Services will be provided. If you are absent, please login into you classes via Canvas so that you will not be counted absent!
Hard to believe that students will be thinking about their spring courses in the next few weeks. Mr. Cavanagh will be meeting with students during Pathways to advise and support creating course selections. Put October 19 on your calendar because that is the day all CA students will enroll in Spring 2021 TCC NE classes!
We have a CA Student Manual that contains important information and requirements. If you haven’t looked it over, please do! Here’s the link:

We will be distributing hard copies to our In Person Learners, next week!

Right about now many students begin to get overwhelmed with school. Hang in there! Talk with your Pathways teacher, contact Mr. Cavanagh. You can do this! You haven’t failed until you quit! #PhoenixStrong!
Always grateful,
Ms Knutz

Freshmen
Next week is an important week! Freshmen that are on campus will be going to have their IDs made during their pathways classes next week and I will also be coming into freshman pathways classes to meet with students about the classes that they’ll sign up for when registration opens on October 19th. All freshmen students should have completed their #NotAnymore training during pathways over the last two weeks and if you haven’t, please reach out to your pathways teacher as it will prevent you from being able to register.
For Juniors and Seniors
I’ll be coming to the junior pathways classes on Friday to talk to you about the classes you’ll be taking in the spring so please make sure that you’re present for the Friday live lesson so as to avoid confusion! Seniors should already be signing up for times to meet with me in the mornings over the next two weeks so that we can make your individual plan for the spring to make sure that we’re getting you the maximum number of college credits with the best possible GPA before sending you on to your next step.
Stress Tips
4. Avoid Negativity
This seems like a no-brainer but in the age of social media it’s easier said than done. Life is too short to not spend it doing things that make you happy, with the people that make you happy! If social media is bringing you down because you’re not receiving enough likes or people are being snarky on your posts the solution is simple: Drop social media and drop the negativity!
5. Assume Positive Intent
When things aren’t going right, try to put yourself in the other person’s shoes and work under the assumption that they weren’t actively trying to make your life more difficult. No one sets out to try to wrong you, and if you can avoid blaming them or complaining about the consequences then you can work towards finding a solution to your problems.
6. Rest
Rest is beyond important, especially at CA. You’re not going to be the best version of yourself if your brain is tired so go to bed early, charge your phone across the room so that when you lay down your not distracted to stay awake, and try to get 7-8 hours of restful sleep so that you can tackle all of the days situations!

ATTENDANCE
Please be aware that as we move through this unique school year with in-person and remote learners, the way in which our teachers take attendance in Skyward has become much more complex. Therefore, to make better use of instructional time, teachers now have the flexibility to formally enter attendance into Skyward up to a full day after the attendance period.
With that said, it is important for parents to know that if you access Skyward to view your student’s attendance, it is possible the system may show them as being absent for the current day, even if they were present in class or online. Additionally, it is possible that remote learning students may still display as absent up until the following day.
As always, we appreciate your patience and understanding.
Nurse
Thank you for your support and understanding as we work to keep all of our students safe and healthy in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. You can be assured that our GCISD nurses are working closely with the Tarrant County Public Health Department to monitor the COVID-19 cases in our community and minimize exposures within the district. We request your help in these efforts by asking that you inform your campus nurse anytime someone in your household is having symptoms of illness that are not normal for them. Your campus nurse can share recommendations about COVID-19 testing and safety practices to prevent the spread of illness. And she will work with you on making a plan for students to return to campus after illness.
COVID-19 causes symptoms that are similar to many common illnesses, and people are infectious before they even have symptoms. So, in the case that someone in your household is displaying symptoms of illness, we ask that all of your children, as potential Close Contacts, stay home until a diagnosis is confirmed. Remember, a Close Contact is a person who is within six feet of you for 15 minutes or more, as would be common within your home. If someone in your house is ill, then everyone has likely been exposed to the virus. Again, your campus nurse is ready to discuss with you about the specifics of your family situation and make the proper recommendations.

CANVAS FOR PARENTS
PARENT OBSERVER ACCOUNTS IN CANVAS
If you would like to follow your child as an observer in Canvas, please watch this short video. This is a great feature because you can see teacher feedback, and the actual assignments that they are working on! Also, you can follow multiple students if you have siblings in grades 6-12 on multiple campuses.
Changing Instructional Model
As a reminder, parents are able to switch from in-person to remote learning at any point during the school year. In order to make this change, please contact the campus counselor.
For families that are wishing to change from remote to in-person learning, that may only be done at the end of a grading period. The process for changing to in-person learning requires parents to complete a Google form that will be shared by your child’s campus prior to the end of the nine-week grading period. Below is a schedule of when the form will become available, when the form must be received by the campus, and when the change will go into effect:
To change after the first nine weeks, parents must complete the form between September 20 and October 5. Your student would begin receiving in-person instruction on October 19.
To change after the second nine weeks, parents must complete the form between November 15 and December 7. Your student would begin receiving in-person instruction on January 6.
To change after the third nine weeks, parents must complete the form between February 14 and March 1. Your student would begin receiving in-person instruction on March 22.
If you have any questions regarding the timing of when parents may change the instructional model selected, or the associated process, please contact the campus counselor.
