Why Did People Move West?

By Bailey Schaefer

The Big Question

Many people are moving West for money. Americans plan to take the Louisiana Purchase away from the Native Americans. The Louisiana Purchase had doubled the size of America in the past. People, called land speculators bought huge plots of land in hopes that the value would increase. When the value fails to increase they proceed to break the land into smaller sections and sell it for a large profit. Manufacturers and merchants are also moving west to make tools and sell tools to farmers. People are also going west to avoid debt and to look for jobs.
