McNair Scholars Program
Deadline to apply: December 2, 2016
Imagine being paid to spend an entire summer doing research while getting help preparing for the GRE
and learning about ways in which to find full funding for graduate school!!!
A highly prestigious, federally funded program, McNair seeks to level the playing field by providing bright and highly motivated undergraduates from traditionally disadvantaged groups with the tools they need to pursue and excel in graduate school. Once accepted into the Program, our scholars learn how to select and apply to graduate programs, receive GRE prep, make university visits, and, most importantly, are paired with a university faculty mentor in their chosen field and spend an entire summer immersed in research. All of our scholars present their research at both local and national conferences and some even co-publish their work together with their mentor! The skill sets learned while in this program position our scholars to be very competitive, giving them not only a better shot at getting into graduate school but also opportunities to receive financing through scholarships, fellowships, and assistantships.
In addition to the prestige associated with being a McNair scholar, there is also a great deal of monetary support. Thanks to generous federal funding, our scholars are given summer stipends, making it possible for them to focus on their research rather than work full-time jobs. Participants also receive the support needed to make graduate school visits, putting them face to face with professors under whom they may later study. Many fees associated with applying to graduate schools and taking the GRE are either waived or paid for by McNair.

Spring 2017 Keith Sherin Global Leaders Semester in DC Program
An exciting Capitol Hill internship/semester in Washington, D.C. is available to an outstanding TRIO SSS or McNair student for the spring 2017 semester.
Sponsored by the Council's Keith Sherin Global Leaders Scholarship Fund and hosted by Marquette University's Les Aspin Center for Government, highly-motivated TRIO students (with at least a 3.0 GPA who have reached the sophomore, junior or senior year of college) will be eligible to spend a semester working in a Congressional office and learning about the political process. One student per semester will be selected for the program, which runs from January 15 to May 5, 2017.
The internship-scholarship covers tuition, fees, and housing for the semester program, which provides up to 18 credit hours. COE will also provide a modest food and transportation allowance as needed. Students are expected to transfer their financial aid wherever possible.
"This presents a tremendous opportunity for exceptional TRIO students to live, learn, and be part of government in Washington," said COE President Maureen Hoyler. "Our program combines the adventure of working in the Capitol for a member of Congress with a strong educational experience at the Les Aspin Center," she said. "I urge students who care deeply about policymaking and the political process to apply."
The Deadline for applications for the spring 2017 semester is
Tuesday, November 15, 2016.
