Suggestions On How to Eliminate Cyber Bullying
- Parents: be aware of what sites your kids are visiting and the content of them.
- Do not visit pages that make you feel bad about yourself, or that make others feel bad about themselves.
Overuse of the Word Bully
The word "bully is defined as a person who is habitually cruel or overbearing to others. Despite its definition, it is becoming increasingly overused. Examples of times where bullying is not involved: A woman made a status asking for suggestions on how to make money. When many people commented suggesting she get a job, she was offended and labeled it as bullying.
A man added a woman he found attractive as a friend on facebook, although he didn't know her. Despite repeatedly rejecting his requests, he pushed on; so she sent him a polite but firm message asking him to stop. The man labeled this as bullying.
About 75% of students admit that they have visited websites bashing other kids.
Websites like ask.fm and other social media networks are often used for the wrong reasons; to hurt and humiliate people. A majority of students admit that they have visited websites doing just that.
Changing School Culture Can End Bullying
Teaching children about legendary human rights heroes like Desmond Tutu, Elie Wiesel and Juliana Dogbadzi helps them learn how to defend themselves and others. While cyber-bullying is relatively new to society, the lessons that these heroes have taught us can be applied.
