A few quick things about this week...
Reading
We will be continuing our novel, Freak the Mighty, this week. We will continue to focus on the following skills and strategies while we are reading:
*Please remind your child to be submitting their Reading Book Logs when finished an independent reading book! I want to make sure everyone gets credit towards their reading goal of 8 books per trimester!
Ask me about: How do characters change throughout novels?
What you can do: Have a conversation with your child about their independent reading. Book conversations can include:
- Character Development - Ask your child to explain how characters change throughout literature.
- Plot Structure
- Continued use of our Notice and Notes Strategies - Be sure to ask you child what parts of the text say, what it means, and why it matters. We are continuing to identify Contrasts & Contradictions to help understand our characters and see how they develop/change/grow throughout our novels.

What you can do: Have a conversation with your child about their independent reading. Book conversations can include:
- A summary of what your child is reading
- A conversation about their characters - a contrast & contradiction, How is your character changing/growing in your book?, What are some of the character's strengths/weaknesses and why?
- A brief read aloud of their book.
- Ask if they have found any new "robust vocabulary" words to add to their bookmark.
Robust Vocabulary will be due this week!
Writing
We will continue our unit on personal narratives this week with our focus on the following skills/strategies:
- Identifying "Watermelon vs. Seed" topics
- Creating a timeline of our narrative
- Identifying the "heart" (theme) of our story
**Spelling - Unit #29 Quiz Friday, pgs. 172-174 due Thursday
What you can do: Ask your child to share their ideas with you from their Writer's Notebook and share events and stories that can help us generate a personal narrative that includes a beginning, middle, and end.
Social Studies
We are continuing Chapter 1 this week. Students will be learning how social scientists reconstruct the lives of pre-historic humans by examining images of cave paintings and other artifacts. A study guide will be going home this week, and we will also be exploring www.learntci.com as an additional study tool in preparation for a quiz on Tuesday, November 21st.
Ask me about: How do social scientists interpret the past?
What you can do: Review your child's notes and vocabulary with them a few minutes each night as a study skill.
