October Guidance Lessons
Our character trait for the month of September is RESPECT. We will be focusing on how to use kindness and respect to help us prevent bullying behaviors. My goal is to make sure that all students at Glenhope understand what bullying is and is NOT. If all of our students are kind and respectful, bullying won't even be able to happen!
I want them to understand that respect is seeing the good in people and things AND treating them with care.
My friends in Kinder, 1st, and 2nd grades will read the book The Legend of Spookley the Square Pumpkin by Joe Troiano. You might be familiar with the story because it has been made into a cute mini-movie on Disney Jr. Due to what happens in the story, Spookley's feelings get hurt and each grade level is going to do age appropriate activities to practice healing his hurt heart and feelings. We will then talk about ways to make sure that feelings don't get hurt in the first place.
Traditional 3rd grade is going to read the book The Juice Box Bully by Bob Sornson and Maria Dismondy. We are going to talk about the difference between being an Upstander and a Bystander. We are also going to talk about the culture of respect that we want to maintain at Glenhope.
ASPIRE 3rd grade and Traditional 4th grade are going to read the book Spaghetti in a Hot Dog Bun by Maria Dismondy. These groups are going to focus on the having the courage to be our true selves and making sure we respond to others with kindness and respect.
ASPIRE 4th and 5th grade will read the book The Jelly Donut Difference by Maria Dismondy. We are going to create recipes for kindness and talk about how we can share our kindness with respect.
October Lessons on Resilience
Kinder and 1st grade are going to read Pete the Cat by James Dean and look for examples of resilience in the story. Can we be like Pete and bounce back when things don't go like we planned?
2nd and 3rd grades are going to read What Do You Do With A Problem? by Kobi Yamada. As the little boy tries to figure out his worries, is he resilient? Or does he go splat?
4th and 5th grades are going to read Trying by Kobi Yamada. It is the story of an experienced artist and an aspiring artist. We will be looking for examples of resilience from both characters.
All students will discover how being more resilient can make us better friends and learners.

Summary:
One of the effects of social distancing and working from home is that we are left, much more than usual, with ourselves. Which can lead to some loss of our sense of self. Do we even know who we are without all the external recognition? No fancy clothes and cars to project an image. No praise or even rejection. No feedback at all to define us. The author shares how his own emotions have been affected by the pandemic and why he sees this time as a unique moment in which we all need to be more curious — about each other and ourselves.
