A Word from Mr. Jerrell
Dear Bain Families,
We have had an AMAZING first quarter of the school year. Many of you have already completed conferences with your child’s teacher. If you have not had the opportunity to meet with your child’s teacher, please reach out to them as soon as possible to set up a conference. We believe that a partnership between home and school is one of the most important parts of your child’s academic development. Please continue to read nightly with your child, inquire about their learning opportunities each day, and reach out to your teacher for more activities to connect the learning between home and school.
To illustrate the need for nightly reading, the authors of the book “Disrupting Thinking: Why How We Read Matters” present the following research:
“To answer how much silent reading is enough, consider...the study that showed that 5th graders who were in the 98th percentile read sixty-five minutes a day outside of school. This meant that in a year, they saw around 4.3 million words. By contrast, students in the 70th percentile were reading about ten minutes a day and thereby seeing only about 622,000 words in a year. Students at the 50th percentile were only reading about 5 minutes a day and were therefore seeing only about 282,000 words per year. And students in the 20th percentile weren’t doing any reading and were seeing about 21,000 words…
The study found that if students added only ten minutes a day of reading, the student who was seeing 21,000 words would, by the end of the year, have seen 321,000 words and now that student would be scoring at about the 55th percentile…
Ten minutes. Ten minutes a day of focused silent reading has the potential to change a child’s academic life, and that might, in turn, change her life’s trajectory.”
We are extremely grateful for all the families who generously donated to our school’s Direct Give Campaign. While we didn’t quite reach our goal, the money we raised will be utilized to continue to strengthen our classroom book collections to provide our students with engaging texts. If you have any feedback on how to improve our fundraising efforts, please feel free to reach out to me directly.
Thank you for all that you do to support our school!

Square 1 Art
Dear Family,
We have partnered with your child’s school to create a unique opportunity to celebrate their artistic accomplishments while raising much needed funds for the school.
Coming home soon will be your child’s custom catalog featuring their artwork. Won’t you help make your child feel like an accomplished artist by purchasing keepsakes for the whole family containing their masterpiece? The school earns profit from every order. And as a thank you for participating, we provide each child with a sheet of stickers imprinted with their artwork — absolutely FREE!
Watch for more details about the campaign and order deadlines. All online and paper order forms must be turned in by the due date on your child’s custom catalog. (No late orders can be accepted.) Together, we can help support the school, build your child’s self-esteem, and create lasting keepsakes from your child’s artistic achievements.

4th and 5th Grade Chorus
Thursday, November 29th at 5:45 pm - Mint Hill Tree Lighting. We will meet at 5:45 pm for a sound check.
Monday, December 17th at 11:00 am - Philadelphia Presbyterian Church (right across the street). We will meet in the school lobby at 10:45 and walk over. The performance will be in the Sanctuary this year. All chorus parents and grandparents are invited to come. I will need about 10 parent helpers to help us walk across the street safely!
Beginning Thursday, November 15th, all chorus members come to every Tuesday and Thursday chorus rehearsal regardless of grade level. We need to practice 4th and 5th grades together at the same time.
Third Grade Winter Music Program
Please mark your calendars for the Third Grade Winter Music Program. It will be on Thursday, December 13th at 6:30 pm. Third graders will meet their classroom teacher in the media center at 6:15 pm. Please have your child wear nice clothes in holiday colors. It will be very warm on the stage, so please do not wear heavy fabrics like sweaters and velvet. Some ideas for the boys are golf, polo, or short sleeve collar shirts with nice pants and shoes, and short sleeve dresses, or tops with a skirt or nice pants for the girls. Song sheets were sent home this week. Students can also practice on Mrs. Graham's web page, which is found on the Bain website under "Faculty and Staff". Thank you!!

Theme - “The Power of Intentional Action: Moving Thoughts to Driving Change”
On April 26, 1967 in Cleveland, OH, the Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr. spoke at Glenville High School. At the very end of this speech to students, he spoke these words: “…if you can’t fly, run. If you can’t run, walk. If you can’t walk, crawl. But by all means, keep moving.” How do you put his words into intentional action? How do you move your thoughts into intentional action in order to drive change? Express your answer through art, digital media, or writing.
