Notes from the Teacher
Hope you are all enjoying a happy and healthy new year!
This month's virture is Kindness. Find a way to practice random acts of kindness in our community and talk with your student about it!
We are learning...
· Use verbs to convey sense of past, present, future
· Know final –e and vowel team conventions for representing long vowel sounds
· Use illustrations and details to describe characters, setting, or events
On Monday, I will have a guest teacher in the classroom so that I can perform individual reading assessments. Please look for an information sheet explaining your child’s reading level.
For the next two weeks we will read text that support the target strategy of Conclusions. Readers must use clues in the words/pictures and think about what they already know. This will help them make smart guesses about what the author does not tell in the text.
Math
· Understand subtraction as an unknown addend problem
· Use addition and subtraction within 20 to solve word problems
· Relate counting to addition and subtraction
· Determine the unknown whole number in an addition or subtraction equation relating three whole numbers
We are looking at solving a story problem that incorporates many of the strategies used so far this year. We will practice using multiple steps and comprehension to solve. This will be a district common assessment.
Writing
· Write narratives in which students recount two or more sequenced event, include some details about what happened, and provide a sense of closure
We focused on how to write an introduction to a personal narrative. A first grade introduction should include who/what/when/where.
Example: This weekend my family and I went to Crossroads to eat dinner.
We will be moving on to adding details to the middle of our narratives.
