Mission Statement

St. Joseph Catholic School fosters a diverse community of disciples empowered through a rigorous and inclusive Catholic education rooted in Gospel values and service to others.

$1 Dress Down Day Tomorrow

We will have a $1 Dress Down Day tomorrow, Friday. All students are invited to bring $1 and dress down tomorrow. The funds raised from the dress down day will be used for an upcoming service project.

Thank You School Supplies

Congratulations to our sixth graders for a successful service project. In honor of St. Gemma Galgani (patron saint of students), a dress down day was held last Friday and more than 8 boxes of school supplies were collected for area Polk County students. Thank you to all who contributed.

Field Trips, Visiting on Campus, and Siblings

All parents are reminded of the fingerprint requirement if you choose to participate in a field trip or be on campus volunteering. The directions for completing the fingerprint process can be found in the Resource section below.

Some teachers are beginning to plan Fall Field Trips for their class. Don't be left out! If you think you may want to attend the field trip, you must be fingerprinted through the Diocese. The process can take 4-6 weeks. Fingerprint clearance lasts for 5 years. If you are not fingerprint cleared, please begin the process TODAY!

Unfortunately, younger siblings are not permitted to be on campus for special events and field trips. Parents who choose to volunteer on campus, or go on a field trip, will need to make alternative plans for siblings.

Thank You for sponsoring our police officer

Special thanks to the Herrera Family for sponsoring our police office for mass this week! If you would like to sponsor an off duty Winter Haven Police Officer for an upcoming school mass, please contact Miss Summer at sdehaven@stjosephwhschool.org to schedule. The cost is $135 per three hours.

reporting absences

Please keep in mind that we do have a new attendance policy at SJCS this school year. Within that attendance policy (which parents have signed and returned and can be found on the school website), there are very clear expectations about reporting student absences. If your child is absent, please be sure to call the attendance line and leave a message that includes the student name, date that he/she will be absent, and the reason for the absence.

St. Teresa of Calcutta Day

We will celebrate the St. Teresa of Calcutta Award that our school received from the Diocese of Orlando. In honor of St. Teresa of Calcutta, (Feast Day Sep. 5th) we will have a school-wide “Blessings Bags” service project. Our goal is to donate 100 “Blessing Bags” to give to children in need through the Mission in Winter Haven.

On Tuesday, September 6th, we will collect new child sized socks, towels, and boxes of individual kid friendly snacks. Bring a donation for the blessing bags and dress in blue and white for St. Teresa on September 6th.

new lunch program

If your child plans to purchase lunch at school, it is important that he/she have money on his/her lunch account. If a student has a negative balance of $20, he/she will not be permitted to purchase a school lunch that day. Rather, he/she will be given a peanut butter sandwich with a drink, and you will be charged half price for the lunch. Please see the "Resources" section of this edition of Eagle's Eye for directions on how to put money on your child's lunch account. *When setting up your child's account, two tips: (1) be sure to select St. Joseph Catholic School Winter Haven; (2) for the student identification number, use your child's AR (accelerated reader) number - call the school if your child cannot tell you his/her AR number.

Please be aware that students have the option to purchase extras. You may want to monitor this on your child's lunch account, or have a conversation with him/her. Please also know that you can put messages on your child's account, restricting the number of snacks or saying that you do not want your child to purchase snacks.

join us for mass

Our 8th graders will host the 11am Mass this Sunday, August 28th, for our parish. All students are invited to dress in school Mass uniform and join us for mass. See Mrs. Haas after Mass and receive a dress down pass, if you are in school Mass uniform.

sacramental preparation

If you intend for your child to receive any sacraments (First Communion) through St. Joseph Catholic Church, it is time to register! Registration is being held after all masses this weekend in the parish center. You can also call the church office at 294-3144 or email Becky Roach at broach@stjosephwh.org.

logging parent service hours

As you know, all parents are required to contribute a total of 20 service hours during the 2022-2023 school year. There are lots of opportunities to earn service hours. Thanks to all those parents who have already given of their time in service. It's time to document those volunteer hours in Renweb. You can find information about logging service hours in the "Resources" section at the bottom of this newsletter.

If you have any questions regarding logging of hours, Mr. Reilly is the best person to help you. Email him at jreilly@stjosephwhschool.org.

Middle School Edge

Our middle school students are invited to attend a St. Joseph’s Middle School Ministry. The night’s theme is called “Art Show: Can We Know God exists?” This theme, and throughout this semester, we will be emphasizing that science and faith can work together. They are not oppositions to one another like many people think.

Come join us at 6:00 PM in the Family Life Center Room #3 for pizza, fun games, and open dialogue about the faith. For this specific night, August 31st, our middle schoolers will be challenged to create sculptures of a popular movie scene and then guess what other groups created. The purpose of this activity is for the youth to ask a creator questions about their creation, which ties into the questions they will be asking about God throughout the semester. The night will close out at 8:00 PM in prayer and with a bi-weekly challenge for the youth to accomplish!

St. Joseph Prayer

O Blessed Joseph, faithful guardian of my Redeemer, Jesus Christ, protector of Mary, the virgin Mother of God, I choose you this day to be my special patron and advocate and I firmly resolve to honor you all the days of my life. Therefore, I humbly ask you to receive me as your client, to instruct me in every doubt, to comfort me in every affliction, to obtain for me and for all the knowledge and love of the Heart of Jesus, and finally to defend and protect me at the hour of my death. Amen.
