McKinney Boyd Band Newsletter
February 22nd- February 27th
A special note to our band family/community.....
WOW, words just don't seem enough to express the gravity of this past week....
We want to take a moment and reach out to our families. We have heard many stories of busted pipes, loss of power, hunger needs and more.
If any of these things currently apply to you and you need help PLEASE reach out, the Boyd Bronco and Band community is here to help! Just ask, and we can get our community to help find solutions together for you!
Solution focused....flexibility is FUNdamental....
As you have pretty much already guessed, we are having to be flexible with our activities/schedule as information keeps coming in. The good news is we have become professionals of "bending" due to circumstances this past year.
Due to the inherent last minute nature of this, we appreciate your patience and we will work out individual scenarios as needed with mutual communication. We are trying to salvage the best that we can.
Here is a short list of things that have been rescheduled so far:
- Leadership camp #1 has been moved to Saturday, February 27th. (9:00AM-12:00PM)
- Robert Selaiden/ Tom Bennett clinics have been rescheduled. Tom Bennett after school rehearsal (Sym 1/Honors) is now on Thursday, March 4th (3:00-5:30)
- Honors band will have "normal" after school sectionals in place of the canceled clinics.
- Ensemble Recording/Recital has been moved to Friday, February 26th. (Same Schedule as posted last week and below, just a new day.)
- Percussion concert has been moved to Thursday, April 15th (Finish your taxes early so can join us :)

Spring Semester Calendar Updates/Adjustments
All clinics this year will be held during school activities except for our 1st Tom Bennett Clinic on 3/4
Symphonic 1= 3:00-4:00pm
Honors Band= 4:00-5:30pm
We are looking forward to hosting band banquet this year on Saturday May 15th.
Due to restrictions for hotels we have come up with a potential alternative that can safely include all band members/families.
We will host banquet on Boyd campus, outside on the south band parking lot. With the exception of dinner/dancing, we will be able to celebrate the year, distribute awards and present our end of year videos like "normal" while maintaining distance protocol.
More info to come soon, but we are excited for this opportunity.
Ensemble contest will be virtual and adjusted for the safety of our students and adjudicators.
We have already begun working on ensembles in class and our traditional Ensemble Recital scheduled on FEBRUARY 26TH **New Date** will be the video/audio recording day for the virtual contest.
View our Itinerary/Program HERE
We will still allow parents and immediate family to join us and watch the performance live. Once the recordings are completed we will compile the them into a google drive folder for our judges to write comments and score the performances.
As a reminder, earning a 1st division on a class 1 ensemble is eligible for letter jackets (Same as previous years)
Our contest will be a "home" contest here at MBHS during the normal school day. We will be recording the students/accompanists in class and solo's will be adjudicated virtually.
We are still asking our students to purchase originals to their solos and secure an accompanist.
***Student's can play on copies but originals are proof of purchase and protect copyright laws. Order early because it may take a few weeks to come in.
Here is a link to our accompanist list: ACCOMPANIST (CLICK)
1st accompanist rehearsal (in class/after school) = week before spring break (3/1-3/5)
2nd accompanist rehearsal (in class/after school) = week after spring break (3/15-3/17)
Solo Performance/Recording days (in class/after school) = 3/18 & 3/19
Earning a 1st division on a class 1 OR 2 solo will qualify you for Letter Jacket
UIL, like everything, is being adjusted due to the guidelines of the district/region/state.
We will record our UIL Concert and Sight Reading on the Boyd stage during the day of March 31st. This concert will replace our "preview concert" that was scheduled for April 1st.
We will allow parents to attend for the recording just as we would for UIL. I will have a band specific schedule out soon attached here for your planning.
We will also be hosting the Dowell MS bands in the afternoon for those families that share campuses/siblings.
Fall of 2021 Auditions.....
The end of semester auditions for next year (2021-2022) for the incoming 9th graders and next years 10th, 11th and 12th graders will be submitted virtually through a Canvas classroom APRIL 26th-28th
You will record/perform as many major scales (12 maximum) and your full range chromatic scale in as many octaves as you are able to in a SINGLE video submission. (only 1 video accepted from each audition-er). Arpeggios are not necessary and will get you no extra credit for this audition.
Stay updated each Newsletter for more updates....
Virtual students can and should attend live in-person after school sectionals if they plan on participating in UIL/concerts.
**Students who cannot participate will need to make up the missed grades with an alternate assignment determined by their primary band director.

Spring Trip: Update
Latest update (2/7):
More and more families are receiving their refunds. Please insist on speaking with a manager/higher up. This seems to be a winning strategy.
Our booster band president is a great resource of getting examples of documentation that you may need. (All examples should be in the folder below)
MISD has cancelled any ability to host outside over night trips for the remainder of the school year. (UIL Concert & SR, Winterguard, day trips do not fall under this umbrella).
Families have been steadily recieving refunds from the insurance company and we are finding that it is taking a bit more "active" insistence to get that response.
I have added the following tips in the Claim folder link below from a parent that has found success in getting their refund. (CLICK HERE for the Shortcut)
***Those families that purchased insurance will have to go back to their claim and adjust the amount that has been refunded!
All families who have purchased insurance can now begin filing their claims.
Our dates are 4/24-4/27.
***Even though we are making progress, there are still forms that we do not have access to and are working to get more information. Please feel free to call/work with the insurance company for clarifications. I will update forms in the hub as I get them.
We have 15 months from point of cancellation to complete our claims.
Information that I currently have access to for claim purposes:
Official Cancellation date: 3/24/20 (NEW CANCELLATION LETTER NOW ADDED TO DRIVE)
Original Deposit date: 6/10/2019
Google Drive Claim Document Hub for Parents
(Will continue to be updated as information is made available to me):
I hope that it is clear we are being as transparent in this process as we can and are all working to find solutions for everyone.
***Understand that this is a point of high stress for every director/travel agency in the country at this point. I do not have all the answers but you can rest assured that taking care of our families is the highest point of focus right now and doing right by you is my highest priority. I am doing EVERYTHING in my power to protect you and find solutions. If you reach out to me with trip questions, I will respond as quickly as I can within 24-48hrs. I appreciate all your grace and patience.
Seniors only! Scholar Artist's of the Week up for grabs!
1. Edit this file in the original Microsoft word format.
2. Turn it in with a High Resolution .jpg photo of yourself to Mr. Treadwell
Encourage you to brag about yourself a bit on the application. Probably good to keep it during your HS years and fairly Fine Arts related. Although if you are next in line to overthrow Joey Chestnut in the Nathan’s Hotdog Eating Competition, that may be something exciting to hear about. ;)
Volunteer work, Church Mission trips, after school jobs, plans after high school are always encouraged to include.
Remind 101 UPDATE/ARCHIVE: Resign up for new group ASAP
Remind is the quickest and easiest way for us to send information out. ***We require all students to join and strongly encourage parents to do also in order to stay informed.
