Juniors: A look ahead to senior year
This issue is primarily dedicated to the needs of juniors. Sessions with counselors this year have focused on researching post-secondary options (careers, various types of colleges, military, etc.) and providing resources to help students make decisions about their plans. Previous newsletters have detailed these sessions. Juniors have been encouraged to use the resources to develop a well-researched, post-secondary plan for the beginning of senior year. This newsletter provides a look ahead to senior year and details steps students can take to get started when they are ready. The activities listed below are not required during the summer. Instead they are offered as a way to help students work ahead on the college application process.
It is easy for juniors to select a plan without careful thought and self-reflection. This makes answering questions about their future so much easier! Please resist the temptation to jump to the decision step. Use summer to....
- Reflect on what is most important in a learning and social environment.
- Talk with your family about the financial boundaries and use the net price calculators on each college's website to predict what your costs might be.
- Compare these costs with other colleges.
- Look at the scholarship section of each college's website. Merit scholarships are more plentiful at some colleges than others.
- Research and visit campuses. Learn about programs that are of interest on each campus. The "document library" in Family Connection has many resources for planning college visits. It can be found on the right side of the home page. If you are just starting to visit campuses, consider going again in the fall when students are on campus. After all, it is the students who give the campus its personality.
Consider all your options...
In April, all juniors researched post-secondary plans with counselors in the College and Career Center. Students chose activities from three areas--Researching Majors and Careers, Researching 4-year Colleges, and Exploring College of DuPage. The activities were designed for continued use as students start to narrow their list of possible plans for after high school. These activities can be found on the Junior page under the heading "Information" on the right side. Scroll down to "April 7-10, 2015, Junior Presentation #2." Click here for a link to the Junior page. Contact your counselor or Mrs. Manderino (College and Career Counselor) with any questions about these activities.
Testing
If students are interested in taking another ACT test, the next date is June 13, 2015. Students can still register (late fee required) through May 22nd. Click here for ACT test dates and registration information.
For students who want to get started in the summer
- Start by researching what has to be submitted to the college and when it has to be submitted. Create a table with this information allowing time for documents to be processed.
- Many of the colleges open their applications on August 1st. Begin completing these applications.
- Read the DGN's College Application Procedures that can be found on the College and Career Information page. Add colleges to the "Colleges I'm Thinking About" list in Family Connection.
- If students are required to write an essay, the student can read the prompts and start writing down ideas. The Common Application essay prompts have already been released. Students interested in a one-on-one help session with a writing teacher should check school email in early August.
- If students are required to submit a teacher or counselor letter of recommendation as a part of the application, complete the Senior Information Sheet. This document is used by teachers and counselors as they write these letters. It can be found in Family Connection's "About Me" tab on the left side under "Surveys to Take." (Note: This tab is available on student accounts only.)
- Transcripts will be available to send to colleges on Thursday, September 10th. Students will learn how to request these documents and others needed for college applications in early September of their senior year.
