Mrs. Anderson's Classroom Update
Week 21: January 29 - February 2
DEAR 3RD GRADE FAMILIES,
We had another week full of learning and growing. Read on to find out what we learned this week, along with other tidbits.

READING
PHONICS
In phonics this week we started Unit 6. We reviewed closed vs open syllables as well as words with y endings. We also learned about the soft and hard c and g sounds (see pictures below) along with a new set of sound-alike words: hi and high.
MATH
In Number Corner, we wrapped up our January activities and started our February activities. In this month's Calendar Grid, students will be measuring the perimeter and area of different rectangles. In this month's Calendar Collector, students will be collecting coins represented as a fraction of a dollar (for example, a dime is 1/10 of a dollar).
In our other math block, we started Unit 4, which covers time, measurement, and fractions. We started by reviewing time on a clock and practicing solving elapsed time problems on a number line. We broke apart elapsed time into friendly numbers (15 minutes, 30 minutes, 1 hour, etc.).
WRITING
This week we started our persuasive essay unit. We started by sharing different topics in school that we have strong opinions about and brainstorming reasons to support these opinions. We talked about how to write a persuasive essay to fit the person we are trying to convince. For example, if we are trying to convince our principal to give us extra recess time, we need to come up with reasons that someone in that role would find persuasive.
This week we were able to fit in a learning log. Starting with this learning log, we are bumping up the expectations -- students are expected to write about two different learning moments and write a paragraph about each one. Students did a great job of rising to the challenge.
Report Cards and Conferences
Report cards were sent home on Friday. In the envelope with your child's report card, you will also find their Fastbridge Family Report and an informational sheet about this report. If you have questions about anything you received, I'd be happy to discuss with you at conferences.
Speaking of conferences, our second round is coming up very soon. They will be held on February 13, 15, and 22. Thank you to all that have signed up for a time slot already. If you still need to sign up, please use this link: https://ptcfast.com/schools/Hamilton_Ridge_Elementary
