Spanish Conversation Group

Wednesday, Feb 17

8:15 - 9:30 a.m. / Literacy Library

The Spanish conversation group for parents has been meeting weekly since January to practice and socialize in Spanish. This initial Spanish conversation group is scheduled through the end of March. We generally have between 12-20 participants at each session and divide into two groups based on level of proficiency. All levels are welcome - the format is not a stepped progression; rather each meeting is a separate unit, so it's never too late to join us!

Parent Meditation

Every Friday

8:20 am - 8:40 am / Flagpole

Please join us for our weekly meditation every Friday by the flagpole area. Yoga sessions are currently on hold while the search for a yoga instructor continues.

Cognitively Guided Instruction in Math

In Cognitively Guided Instruction (CGI), while working closely with a teacher, students learn math concepts by building on their existing knowledge and experience, and intuitive interest in problem solving. Mistakes are valued as much as correct answers, as they give insight into student thinking which helps teachers guide students toward progressively advanced concepts and principles.

Lead Math Demonstration Teacher Darlene Fish and UCLA Professor Megan Franke worked with teachers at the Lab School to strengthen the application of CGI math instruction throughout the school, ensure consistency across each grade level, and seamless concept progression year over year. They analyzed expectations, conducted assessments of both teachers and learners, and gathered reflections on best practices.

Their research findings are being used to further refine the curriculum and strengthen the overarching structure, and also are being shared broadly and locally through outreach programs.

This year, our CGI in math practice has been tapped by the South Pasadena and El Segundo school districts, the Camino Nuevo Charter Academy group (Silverlake/Handcock Park) and the Polytechnic School (Pasadena) for implementation in K-5th education. Classroom observation opportunities have been provided to variety of teachers associated with the Cotsen Foundation, which supports leading-edge practices.
