Principal's Message
It is hard to believe that we are over halfway through January already. We have a busy next few weeks with our dress up career day next week, our upcoming community engagement on January 30, and family literacy day. Staff have focused on creating strong foundational skills in literacy and numeracy for all students. We have worked to create more opportunities for reading and Family Literacy Day is another great way to share our love of reading! Family Literacy Day is an excellent way to help create positive connections to literacy at home. As a family you could read stories together, follow along with a recipe, or create music to celebrate the day! As a school, we will be celebrating Family Literacy Day on February 2 with our Special Person Lunch: Reading Edition. Your child is encouraged to invite someone to our special person lunch where we will share stories and celebrate literacy together!
The Alberta Assurance Surveys will be sent out to parents shortly, you may already have yours. At NCS, all parents and students in grades 4 - 9 will receive the survey due to the size of our school. This survey is used for staff at NCS to understand what is going well and ensure that we can continue in that direction and if there are any areas of growth for us to plan accordingly. This survey provides an opportunity for parents to give their overall feedback on what is working well at school to help us plan for the future. If you have any questions about the survey, where the results go, what the questions mean, or need help with any part of it, please reach out to the school and we would be happy to help.
Our Community Engagement Meeting is in less than two weeks on January 30. I highly encourage all parents, guardians, and community members to attend. This meeting has real implications for the future of our grade 9s attending Niton Central School which will affect the entire school and it is imperative that we have as many perspectives as possible. I also encourage you to take a look at previous survey results that were collected from stakeholders in April 2023 about moving the grade 9s from NCS. These survey results show various perspectives from parents, students, and staff members around this topic. Please click the link below to view these surveys. Community Engagement Survey Results
I hope that everyone has a great week ahead and if you need anything, please reach out to me.
Have a wonderful week,

Learning in Action
Sewing Sock Monkeys
Students in junior high have been putting their sewing skills to good use by creating sock monkeys. Students have learned to follow a general pattern and use different stitches to create their wonderful monkeys in art class.
Shape Art
The k/1 class created different designs with the shapes that they have been learning about. It was a great way to combine numeracy (shapes) and art in a fun and creative way!
Healthy Board Games
The 6/7 class spent their health block learning about the importance of hygiene and looking after their bodies all while playing a board game! Students covered topics such as general hygiene, sleep health, and more while playing a game similar to snakes and ladders. They had a lot of fun covering many topics in an engaging way!
Boomwhacker Music
We love boomwhackers! The 2/3 used these instruments to learn about different notes, how to follow music, and playing in unison! They sounded great!
Building Mechanics
Our 6/7 class utilized Robotic Connects. These kits come with many different parts almost like fancy legos, for students to create different designs. They can create something from their own imagination or follow instructions to create a specific type of creation. These kits have parts which allow their creations to be mobile so that they can create vehicles, robots, or any other design they come up with. This is a wonderful opportunity for our students to use their hands-on problem solving and creative skills. These skills not only help learning come to life but help students develop abilities which could lend themselves to engineering, mechanics, or artictecturhe. What a great learning opportunity!
Athletics
This past week, our girls and boys teams played at YKCS. They showed some great effort and worked together as a team. The upcoming week is busy for our athletes with both a home and away game. We hope to see many of you there to cheer on our teams on January 23rd as they play their home game against Grand Trunk!
Go Knights!
