Give the gift of books this holiday season!

The annual Guide Book to Gift Books for 2012 has been released. Find age-appropriate book suggestions for holidays, birthdays, and all your other gift-giving occasions. You'll find picture books as well as books for older readers along with retail prices and book summaries. Reading Rockets also publishes an annual book buying guide. See the 2012 Books as Gifts guide here.

Online Storytime

Visit the We Give Books website to read stories online with your kids. In the spirit of giving, each time you read a children's book on their site, they donate a book to a charity that you designate! It's completely free and only requires a log-in. For holiday read-alouds, search for holiday or Christmas books on the We Give Books site. Be sure to also listen to Lou Diamond Phillips read The Polar Express on the Storyline Online website.

Create Trading Cards for People, Places, Events, & Things

ReadWriteThink, a popular educational resource site, has launched their Trading Card Creator, available for free on both the iPad and as a web version. Students can upload images, enter text descriptions, save and revise their cards, and share the finished product out with others. To learn more about the ReadWriteThink Trading Cards, read this short blog post on Free Technology for Teachers. Try it out with your kiddos. It's fun and educational!

Thank you for shopping our Book Fair!

We had a VERY successful book fair last month. Thanks to all the students, teachers, parents, and family members who came out to shop and support our school. Many thanks to the parent volunteers who dedicated their time in helping setup and take down the book fair and assisting with preview and sales days. A huge thanks goes out to our book fair volunteer coordinator, Vera Timmons, for her hard work in making the book fair run smoothly. Stay tuned for our early spring book fair.

Box Tops Winner

Congratulations to 2nd grade for winning the Box Tops for Education fall contest! What a great way to recycle trash and earn money for our school. The total money collected was $1,906.10. Please keep collecting your box tops. Another grade-level contest will be held in the spring.

Support our library by being a Book Buddy.

Honor a child's birthday, a special event like a wedding or anniversary, or the memory of a friend or loved one by being a Book Buddy. The Media Center has brand-new books for you to place an inscription inside to honor that special person and donate to our library collection. After a donation is made, you can be the first person to checkout the new book! See Mrs. Matney or Mrs. Bootle to choose a book or browse the available choices online. Make checks payable to Lake Murray Elementary School. A completed form (found at the bottom of the webpage) along with payment must accompany the book(s) you wish to donate.
