Proposed School Start Times - Effective 2020-21 School Year

In November 2016, our voters approved the passage of a $247.5M Capital Improvement Bond that provided the District the opportunity to build a new high school and transform several other schools, in order to add capacity. Transformation Visioning Advisory Committees, made up of parents and staff members engaged in visioning-related conversations, were created for each of the transformation projects. In these processes, questions were asked by parents about whether the District would consider looking at school start times.

Those questions led to a study of what current medical research says about school start times, in addition to the impact start times can have on student achievement. We researched current successful trends regarding start times as well. A survey of all middle and high school students, all District parents, and all District staff elicited over 2800 responses.

The careful examination of research, case studies, school success, and survey input has led to a recommendation of a change to school start times, beginning with the 2020-2021 school year:

  • Elementary School -- 7:55am-2:15pm
  • Middle School -- 8:30am-3:20pm
  • High School -- 8:30am-3:20pm

The proposal would keep elementary teachers’ work day at 7:30am to 3:30pm, and would shift middle/high teachers’ work day to 7:45am to 3:45pm. Although the professional day for middle/high teachers only shifts by 15 minutes, students will benefit from a shift of 30 minutes each day and still have access to teachers before and after school. The move to staggered start times would have little effect on bus ride times or costs.

The proposal to shift school start times for the 2020-2021 school year will be presented to the Board of Directors for a first read on November 13, and for a second and final read on December 11, giving sufficient time to make adjustments for next year. As with all recommendations we put forward, the District focuses first and foremost on what is best for students, while also taking into account the needs of families and staff. This recommendation is a compromise that remains in line with that practice.

Volunteer Background Checks

Sherwood School District welcomes volunteers in our schools and classrooms. The time our parents and community members devote to our schools is what helps make our district a great place for ALL kids. As a reminder, every volunteer in Sherwood School District must have a criminal background check completed on a yearly basis. It can take 7-10 business days to complete the process, so if you would like to volunteer for a field trip or other event, please plan ahead. Please see here for more information about volunteering or to access the background check forms.
