Tech Tips
If a student's Chromebook won't connect to WiFi, be sure to check the time and date. If it's too far off, it will fail to authenticate and will not connect. Chrome books must be kept charged, if they aren’t they will reset their date and time to one in the future.
All you have to do is click on the date and time in the lower corner, open up the time and date setting, and adjust to current.
Apps can be pushed to student Chromebooks! If you find a very useful one, just put in a Helpdesk for it to be added. Be sure to specify the app as there are many that sound similar. Also include the grade level and school where it should be pushed.
Please use helpdesk.hobart.k12.in.us when you have technology issues. Technicians receive these right away in their regular email, so it's just as fast as sending an email. However, Helpdesks offer the bonus that your need will be put in the hands of the right person to help if it's not your building tech. Including as much information as possible will also help get your problem solved more quickly!
Digital Daredevils!! Girls Who Code!
This week's Digital Daredevils are Courtney Gabriel and her 16 Girls Who Code club members at Ridge View Elementary! The club is FREE to start and includes copies of the book, Girls Who Code: Learn to Code and Change the World for grades 3-5. Ridge View also receives FREE snacks through a grant from Girls Who Code. The club is available for grades 3-12. Visit the Girls Who Code website if you are interested in starting a club! More details from Courtney describing the club and her experiences with it are below. Thanks for bringing this club to your students and sharing the information, Courtney!
Girls Who Code is a worldwide club that is only for girls that would like to learn how to code. Ridge View Elementary started their chapter of this program at the beginning of December 2018. The girls meet every Monday from 3:30-4:30 until March18th. At the end of the program, there will be a party for all the girls where they will be able to highlight one of their project that they coded over the course of the club and receive a certificate of completion in front of their family and their teachers.
Girls Who Code encourages girls to open their minds and join in a “sisterhood relationship” feeling so we are trying to build with all the girls in the club at Ridge View! I encourage the girls to realize that we are in this adventure together and if they look around the room, they do not only see their peers, but they see other girls that are about to go on the same adventure that they are. This club also encourages girls to be Brave by tackling the unknown, speaking up and taking risks. I especially love this program because it tries to ignite girls’ interest in computer science, and the amount of females in this profession are not at all where they could be. Hopefully with programs being run all of the United States and the country we will be able to change that for this growing field.

Another helpful tip for connecting from home is that if they don't see the pop-up in the lower right, they need to go to a non-https:// site such as http://www.speedtest.net. Then the Captive Portal screen will appear.
You can email Chris or Tammy. You can always call Tammy at x8979 and leave a voicemail.
Please let Tammy know if you need any help with portfolio-related items!
