Homework-Free Vacation & Holiday Message from Mr. Burkhead
Dear Monomoy Family,
It has been a tradition here at MRHS that over the winter break we have a “homework free” vacation. It is important that we take the time to enjoy friends and loved ones unencumbered by homework. So, please thank your teachers and instructional assistants as there will be NO HOMEWORK!
Now I’d like to share my holiday message as principal. As a school family, I’ve witnessed so much love, kindness, and compassion here at Monomoy. Our philosophy is that we are a Home Away From Home. We value this philosophy and ask that as you go home for the break you pay forward this philosophy within the community. The best gifts in life are free. I’d like us all to commit to giving something to someone else. For example, help your parents clean the house, wash the dishes or take out the trash, help a neighbor shovel snow (don’t worry it’s coming), send a handwritten note to a loved one or friend telling them how much you appreciate them, or perform any simple act of kindness. These little gifts are what make the holiday season so special, and our world a better place to be.
Finally, let’s all take the challenge of spending more time conversing face to face with others, and less time interacting with our phone. There is no substitute for genuine human interaction. We will miss you all and look forward to welcoming everyone back on January 2nd.
Happy Holidays!
Mr. Burkhead
Wishing you all a happy and safe holiday season!
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

The Dynamic Duo!
For those who aren't music buffs: They are both wearing dynamic markings. These markings tell a musician to sing or play at a certain noise level. For instance the 'f' means "forte" which means a musician should play or sing loudly. The 'p' means 'piano' which means the musician should play or sing softly. And there you have it! 2 dynamics = the Dynamic Duo!
A visit to Provincetown Art Association & Museum
Ms. Waystack's Hands-On Art History class traveled to the Provincetown Art Association & Museum on Friday, December 14th to learn about the historical roots on art on Cape Cod as well as contemporary artists living and working in our communities today. They toured the galleries with Education Curator Lynn Stanley, sketched work and learned to create drypoint etchings with teaching artist Vicky Tomayko.

JUNIORS
ATTENDANCE
Attendance letters are being mailed home regularly to parents and guardians to document attendance related concerns. We encourage everyone to check Aspen see the specific dates and to contact the school if there are any extenuating circumstances. If tardiness is a frequent problem for students, here are a few tips to try:
- Set a second alarm that is away from your bed. Are you giving yourself enough time in the morning to get ready?
- Plan, plan, plan! Lay out an outfit the night before; pack your bags and have all your supplies ready to grab and go in the morning.
- Eliminate or reduce screen time at night! Shut off electronics before bed and give yourself time to relax and get a good night's sleep!

Athletics Weekly Summary
December 17th - December 21st
Written by: Caroline Howard
It’s the most! Wonderfulll time of the yearrrrrrr…. And that couldn’t be more true for our Sharks folks! We had a very exciting week here at Monomoy, and all of the holiday cheers rang loud in the crowd as our Basketball and Hockey teams sent us off! Now let’s get down to the nitty gritty!
Well, you know what they say about things that go on on Friday nights! No not that! I’m talking about the impressive Boys Basketball game that went down in the Shark tank! Last Friday, the boys faced off against the Black and Gold Nauset Warriors who traveled into the Sharks territory. The Sharks fought hard, especially Senior Captain Isaiah Stafford who displayed outstanding effort as well as patience when it came to containing these Nauset Warriors. Despite the Sharks solid game, the Warriors ultimately came in for the win 59-32. Nice effort boys! You’ll get them next time!
Also on Friday was the Girls Basketball game. These Sharks headed over to the Warriors court and got pumped up for a good game! Notable play by Senior Aleidy Rodriguez-Minaya with her aggressive defense and her consistent shots on the hoop! Nice job Aleidy! Another teammate that put forth a great effort was Erin Starkey (Senior) at the net. Starkey was vital for the Sharks with her containment and great steals from the Warriors! Way to go Erin! Overall, the Girls played an exciting game against the Warriors, no matter the outcome! The Warriors should watch out for next time!
Our Boys Basketball team continued into the weekend with a game on Saturday against the Barnstable Red Raiders. In this nail biting game, one Shark seemed to lay it all on the line. Senior Christopher Hall played an influential part in putting points on the board, as well as keeping points off the board for the Red Raiders. Way to play Chris! It went until the very end, but ultimately the Sharks fell to the Red Raiders with a close score of 46-45. Nice effort boys!
Also on Saturday was the Boys Hockey game! The Sharks played the ferocious Wareham Carver Hockey team who came to the game ready to rumble! But, the Sharks were prepared for a big game and a big win! And that…they got! The Sharks managed to come back in the second period and put 3 goals on the board with the help of Noah Tambolleo (Senior), Lucas Tambolleo(Sophomore), and Kyle Gabri(Junior). Wyatt Archibald had a terrific showing of his skills on the forward line as an eighth grader for the Monarchs! A tall order for a youngster, but he was up to the challenge! Nice job Wyatt! The final score of the game read 3-2! A well deserved win boys! Nice job!
On Tuesday, Boys Basketball tipped off against SJP. The Boys displayed their teamwork throughout the game with solid passing and communication on the court! The final score of the game was 75-55! Way to go boys! Girls Basketball also faced SJP on Tuesday! The Girls had a downright battle until the very end with SJP, and came out for the win 37-26! Nice job girls! Keep it up!
Wednesday night brought around an exciting battle against the DY Dolphins for the Monarchs! This game had fans on the edge of their seats as the game ticked in to the very final seconds. The overall score was 1-1, with Kyle Gabri taking a shot on the net, and Cam Coomber tipping it in during a Power Play! Nice teamwork boys!
On Thursday, we had both Boys and Girls Basketball playing against the DY Dolphins. Girls Basketball faced off first, and showed how truly motivated this team is. The girls gave their all the entire game, but finally fell to the Dolphins 31-30. Solid effort girls! You almost had them! Boys Basketball tipped off their game over at the Lagoon, and this game was just as close as the last! The Sharks showed their athleticism and aggressiveness against the Dolphins throughout the game, but ended up losing 59-52. Nice try Boys!
Well, what a week it has been! I want to wish everyone Happy Holidays, and hope everyone has a wonderful Winter Break! Remember, it is break so that means all diets go out the window, and all the cash in your wallet somehow disappears too…. Anyways, I’m Caroline Howard and Go Sharks!

Shark Shoutout...
- Shout out to Dr. Otto who consistently maintains a positive relationship with his former students who are now in here - by coming in frequently to visit with them. They look forward to his visits and that he cares about how they are doing in and out of school. His advice to them (and helpful comments to me on our lessons!) adds so much to the culture of our program and the school -Mr. George Sowpel
- I want to give a Shark Shoutout to all the students, staff, and families that have welcomed me to MRHS. Everyone has been so welcoming and patient as I learn the ropes and I am just so happy to be in this district. I feel the sense of school spirit and pride as I walk through the halls. I was in awe of the talent displayed at the recent holiday concert. I really enjoyed seeing the students and staff take part in Spirit Week and seeing all of the fun and creativity that the entire school had together. I look forward to continuing to meet more students and families as the year goes on. I am so honored to be able to be a Shark! Looking forward to starting 2019 with all of you! -Mrs. Lindsay Ginnetty
- Congrats to the seniors on 2nd place in the tree competition. Your teamwork and artistic talent were awesome! We will bring the toys for tots donations to the Fire Station today. -Mrs. Betsy Casey
