A Message from Ms. Cimino
This month we will be taking part in the One School One Book Program. The PTA has generously provided a copy of the book Friendship According to Humphrey for each Potter Family. The goal of this program is for families to read this book together at home, there will be trivia questions for the students to answer each day about what they read the night before. A letter with more information will be sent home accompanying the book. We look forward to taking part in this as a Potter Family, and encourage you to Tweet @berkeleypotter with photos of your family reading.

VISION SCREENING IS KEY TO HEALTHY DEVELOPMENT!
According to Prevent Blindness America, approximately 1 in 5 school age children have a vision disorder. Vision problems can impair child development and interfere with learning. Early detection and treatment are critical. Visual functioning is a strong predictor of academic performance in school-age children, and vision disorders of childhood may continue to affect health and well-being throughout the adult years.
What you can do:
1. Watch your child while at play, and while looking at books, pets or other people. If something does not seem right, discuss this with your child’s doctor.
2. Talk with your doctor about any family history of vision problems (such as “lazy eye”, a “crossed eye”, use of an eye patch as a child to correct vision, or need for eyeglasses with a strong prescription).
3. Ask at every well child visit if the child’s eyes and vision have been checked.
4. Ask for results of the vision screening and make sure you understand what they mean.
5. Your child’s doctor may recommend that he/she see an eye doctor to evaluate a problem found during the screening. If so, be sure to make and keep that appointment.
6. After the eye appointment, make sure all results are sent back to your child’s doctor and a copy is provided to you.
Vision screening is required in New Jersey for all state funded preschools and public schools grades K-12. If you've received a referral for a failed vision screen in school, it's important to follow up with a professional examination either with an opthalmologist, your child's pediatrician or one of the following services available in our community:
The Ocean County Health Department offers free eye screening clinics every second Tuesday of the month at the Ocean County Health Department main site at 175 Sunset Avenue, Toms River, from 8:00am – 2pm by appointment only. The Ocean County Health Department Eye Screening Clinic identifies vision problems in children and adults and takes steps to ensure that they are addressed.
Call 732-341-9700, ext. 7604 to set up an appointment or for more information about any of their services.
VSP Vision Care for Sight for Students, is an Eyes of Hope gift certificate program. This program provides gift certificates for a free eye exam and, if prescribed, new glasses to students 19 and younger who qualify. Call the school nurse for more details.
