Principal Message

Hello Pershing Families!

Welcome to the 2021-2022 School Year!

Although more detailed information will be sent to you via email next week, please mark your calendars for important upcoming events.

2021-2022 School Year

School begins on Thursday, August 12th at 8:15a.m. following our standard schedule. On Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays, dismissal is at 2:45p.m. for Kinder through 6th grades. On Thursdays, dismissal is at 1:30p.m., returning to our previous school schedule. TK is a half day program and is dismissed at 11:35a.m. every day. Being that we start on a Thursday, please remember dismissal is at 1:30p.m. on the first day of school. Friday, dismissal is at 2:45p.m.

Classroom assignments are being finalized and will be shared through the Parent Portal and Google Classroom on August 6th. To verify enrollment and to update emergency contacts and parent contact information, please to go:

Class assignments (teacher name) will post in the Parent Portal on August 6th.

Meet & Greet Your New Teacher Opportunity!

Please join us to meet your child's new teacher on Tuesday, August 10th! In the past, this event has taken place behind the library. This year, teachers will each be at their classroom door and will meet with students and parents at the doorway of the classroom. Although we will be primarily outside, please wear masks and honor social distancing.

Based on the first letter of your last name, please come during this time frame suggested below:

8a.m. A-F

8:15 G-L

8:30 M-Q

8:45 R-Z

The "Meet and Greet Your New Teacher" event is optional and provides an opportunity for brief connection, helps students to find their classroom, and where their line will be located before school begins. For families who are unable to bring a student to the "Meet and Greet," please rest assured that many staff will be available to assist students the first day of school to help them know exactly where to go and will even walk students to class if they need support.

Once the school year begins, students will not have to wear masks when outdoors at school during the school day, for example, when at recess. Students and staff will continue to wear masks inside the classroom and school buildings (with the exception being lunch). Most importantly, we are very excited to return to full days back together! More information continues to be shared from the State and County Health Departments with our District leadership, and as any guidelines change, I will keep staff and families updated.

The Pershing Office officially opens on Monday, August 2nd. More information will be shared next week regarding our Pershing Family Handbook, arrival and dismissal procedures and tips, additional events to add to your calendar, information from the Pershing PTO (Parent Teacher Organization), and more! Calendar of Upcoming Events

August 12: First Day of School for the 2021-2022 School Year!!

Woo hoo! It is going to be an amazing year, Panthers!

  • Dismissal at 1:30p.m.

August 25: Back-to-School Night

Typically this is a PARENT ONLY event to help parents connect and learn about the school year with your child's teacher. We would love to have one parent for each student attend this event, helping to keep numbers low. Back-to-School Night is an important opportunity to help parents feel well-informed about classroom routines, homework, communication plans and to have an opportunity to ask questions. As Pershing staff plan for Back-to-School Night, I will send out updates, along with the scheduled times.

September 6: Labor Day - NO SCHOOL

Welcome New Pershing Team Members!

This year we welcome several new staff members! Please join us with a warm welcome to the following new Panthers:

Our former school secretary, Mrs. Elizabeth Welch, has begun a new role with our Technology Services Department supporting District Financial Systems and we wish her all the best! She will be missed!

New Pershing School Secretary: Mrs. Celeste Whedon, who is coming to us from Nutrition Services within SJUSD, helping to support the Free and Reduced Meal Programs. She will be a warm friendly face you first see in the office when you visit campus. Tammy Hart, Attendance Clerk, will be continuing with us this year, as well, and begins her first August with us!

Evening Custodian (full time): Mr. Petro Vykhovanets, joins us after working for at least 7 years at Gateway Community Charters, primarily in the middle school setting. He is very excited to move here to San Juan and Pershing! Ken Ivie, former Evening Custodian, is enjoying his second retirement.

4th Grade Teacher: Mrs. Jennifer Pearce joins us from Whitney Avenue Elementary, where she has taught for the past 9 years. She has been in the District since 2006, and has taught grades TK through 6th grade. Mrs. Pearce is very excited to join Mrs. Koopmans and Mrs. Holland on our 4th grade team.

6th Grade Teacher: Mr. Andrew Coppola join us from Loomis USD, but is well known in Camp Winthers’ circles. Mr. Coppola he has worked at Camp Winthers for over 10 years, most recently as a Program Leader. He is also a local in many ways, having graduated from Casa Roble! (Go Rams!) For the past 6 years he has taught at Loomis, primarily as a science teacher for 7th and 8th grades. Mrs. Rugg and Mrs. Kimbrell are very excited to have him join their team - the first in years that we have had three 6th grade classes!

Intervention Teacher, funded by SJUSD "Expanded Learning Opportunities" Funding:

Mrs. Elizabeth Allan is stepping into Pershing's new Intervention Teacher role this year, and will use Room 21 as her center hub. The primary support focus will center on supporting students in 3rd through 6th grades. Our entire school is very excited about this added resource to our school.

TK through 2nd Grade Instructional Assistant I positions, funded by ELO: Please join me in welcoming a wonderful group of Pershing parents who have applied and were selected as new Instructional Assistants to Pershing!

Mrs. Beth Ellsworth, working with 5th and 6th grade classes

Mrs. Ashleigh Tataipu, working with our TK class

Mrs. Elianna Elliott, working with Kindergarten classes

Mrs. Stephanie Pacheco, working with 1st grade classes

Mrs. Marcie Young, working with Kindergarten and 1st grade classes

Mrs. Katy McConnell, working with 1st grade classes

Mrs. Alyssa Gutierrrez, working with 2nd grade classes

The added instructional assistant positions are part of the District implementation of Expanded Learning Opportunities, funded through a new grant that SJUSD applied for this past June. The goal is to hire 4 more instructional assistants to work in TK-2nd grades so that each classroom has one instructional assistant to support. We are thrilled about this amazing addition to our team, as students will benefit from the additional support and time with caring adults.
