The Community Ed Connection
Instructor Newsletter
Spring Break is March 9 - 13!
Our Community Learning Center is a place where lifelong learning takes place. NEISD is committed to being involved in the community because when one of us succeeds, we all succeed.
Many of the adults who go there support and contribute to our schools each and every day. They have the opportunity to enroll in affordable classes with topics that help improve job skills, personal care, parenting and even leisure activities. This is also the home of our ALIR program – our very successful learning academy for persons age 50 and older.
We also have opportunities for adults who want to improve their job possibilities, career training programs and workforce certifications. Plus, our Adult Education department offers free English as a Second Language and High School Equivalency classes -- because we don’t want life’s barriers to stand in the way of a person’s growth.
Many in our community also benefit from our Senior Star Program. Anyone who lives in the District and is 65 years old or older gets free access to student athletic and fine arts events, among other benefits.
With thousands of our students participating in extracurricular events each year, many more grandparents, family members and friends get to attend and support their students, without the worry of a financial expense. All they have to do is call Central Office (210-407-0556) to sign up.
NEISD has a great community. And I am thankful for all the support.
I’ll see you around the District.
Sincerely,
Sean Maika, Ed.D.

New classes at Inspire Fine Art Center!
Meet Aminah Dece
Aminah will be leading the “Poetry Workshop” class at Inspire that begins on March 4th. Aminah earned degrees in Fine Arts and Art History at UTSA and is currently teaching The Arts at Kirby Middle School. She performs in poetry circles, especially Puro Slam, which has gone to nationals several times. Below is a video of Aminah performing.
Meet Bill Glass
Bill began as a metal fabricator by framing and trimming houses. After discovering he had a knack for woodworking, he began working as a carpenter, making furniture and displays for major home improvement chains and hospitals. Years later, he is now a member of a woodworking club and he builds guitars with a group of likeminded woodworkers in San Antonio. Bill says, “working with your hands has a calming effect.” Bill will be teaching the “Intro to Woodworking” classes at Inspire this spring. And we’ve had such a great response that we’ve already added three more sessions.
Welcome, Bill and Aminah! To check out all of Inspire’s spring classes (including “Basket Weaving” and “Basics of Welding”) visit our website and scroll through our Creative Expressions category https://bit.ly/2Va3apd.
