Dyslexia and an iPad
Apps to support learning
Supportive apps
the apps below can support the learning by using the iPad features such as reading words to you, allowing you to record your reading, highlighting the words as they are read out and practicing spelling.
See Touch Learn
This is a great app for helping letter recognition in the form of lessons. There is a small charge to unlock the sight words but it works on a simple principle of selecting the correct words. It will help learners learn sight words.
Phonics Genius
This app will speak the words to your child and highlights word patterns to help with learning through sight. It also supports a record function for children to say the word and record progress. The words are in sets so you can work on a card set each day. With the speech integrated it will help learning through sound as well as sight.
Visual Reading
This app supports dyslexic students by giving images to the words. This app is built specifically for students with learning needs. Children can create their own stories by linking images and words.
Dragon Dictation
Similar to the above app, this one will turn spoken word into words. With a dyslexic child it will help make the links between the words they know and what they may look like when written.
Blio
This app helps to read through books with children. It highlights the words that are being spoken to help make the link between the words and what they look like. You can also change the page colour which can support how the words appear on the page.
Bookboard
This app rewards children for reading. It gives a selection of books that are age specific and allows you to highlight the text that you are reading. As you read books you get to unlock more
First Words Sampler
This is a nice activity app for spelling words. It says the words back to you as you spell out the word. For sight learners this can be supportive in recognising words.
