Check out some of these resources and features from this service with over 87,000 resources. Included below is a link to a quick video tour created by my colleague, Helen Morrison. It is an excellent overview. Then check out the galleries of some of my favorite resources in the service!
A Great Example of a STEM Resource from PBS LearningMedia
This is one of my favorite examples of a video that touches on all aspects of STEM but especially, engineering, science, and technology!
(Grades 4-6) This eBook created by KET is full of interactives and videos and teaches students about the natural diversity of life in the state of Kentucky.
(Grades Pre-K-2) Everyday Learning is a collection of video and interactive multimedia resources is divided into Everyday Science, Everyday Math, and Healthy Me.
(Grades 3-5) This is a wonderful collection of 18 videos that teach natural science and economics concepts through the theme of gardening. This fun series uses children narrators, rhyming narration, and a combination of live action, stop action, and computer animations.
(Grades Pre-K-12) This collection features images of animals, plants, and places, all of which are free for use in the classroom or in educational presentations or reports.
The collection is comprised of interactive catalogs with a thumbnail image and information about the subject of the picture. Clicking on the thumbnail image takes you to a larger photo you can download or drag to your desktop.
(Grades K-12 depending on title) This collection of STEM instructional resources focuses on all things Kentucky. Teachers and students have access to video and images from award-winning KET programs, with educational support materials developed in line with state academic standards. Topics include life sciences, geometry, and biology.
(Grades 4-12) This collection of sixteen interactives is subtitled "An Interactive Guide to Biodiversity" which is an apt description. It was adapted from the book "Kentucky's Natural Heritage: An Illustrated Guide to Biodiversity".
(Grades 5-8) This collection consists of 40 engaging self-paced lesson modules covering all major subject areas that allow students to practice their literacy skills as they watch videos, take notes, and manipulate interactives. Great for that struggling reader or writer who needs a extra boost!
Math At the Core
(Grades 5-8) Find engaging media and integrated activities, all aligned with the Common Core State Standards in Mathematics. Designed for upper elementary - middle school students of diverse learning styles and backgrounds and produced by a collaborative of public media stations and producers with funding from the CPB. Here is a link to the specific resource I used in the training today on the sloth.
(Grades 5-12) In this video segment from Design Squad—a PBS series featuring high school contestants tackling engineering challenges—A student team competes in a bridge design/construction challenge that requires them to build a suspension bridge using only pre-industrial tools and natural resources. Do a keyword search for "Design Squad" for many more great STEM related resources!
PBS Learning Media Dashboard and Tools
The following screen captures show where these are located on the site. I am also including here a link to a more in-depth step-by-step 'S'more" on these tools and how to use them, created by colleague Cynthia Warner: https://www.smore.com/r77u7
DIscovery Education Streaming
This overview looks mainly at two new features, the QuickList, and Board Builder.
(Note: You must have a Discovery account to look at the service and you will need your school's "passcode" to create one. To obtain this passcode either check with your building or district technology coordinator or contact me via email with your school name and I will send it to you. )
This new handy feature of Discovery Ed. allow you to quickly "bookmark where resources are located by putting them in a "thumbnail filmstrip" display at the bottom of the webpage. This allows you to pull that resource up quickly or even drag the resource into a board builder board you are constructing. Once in the quicklist the resource can also be placed in "My Content" , other builder tools, or assigned to a class or student. It is so quick and easy!
Discovery Ed. Board Builder
Here is a link to a Board Builder board I have constructed as an example. (Note: You must have a Discovery account to be able to access this or any board within the service.)
