A Peek at Last Week
In Science:
This week the Scholars chose favorite things they learned about in science and then paired up to create their entry for our Shoebox Science Fair. They had the take their knowledge about the topic and then search for a real world problem to explore that relates to their topic. They wrote driving questions or a Statement of Purpose and then started on investigating their issue. This coming week the Scholars will have time to finish their shoebox displays and then that last week of school we will have our ASPIRE 5 Shoebox Science Fair!
In Humanities:
This week the Scholars spent time reading their book club book (many still need to read at home this weekend to be ready for Monday). The majority of our Humanities block has been our study of the Constitution - understanding the functions and balance of power between the 3 branches and then comparing the makeup of the 1st Congress to the 113th Congress.
Red Nose Day on Thursday
Students are paid in coins for chores done CHEERFULLY at home. (Think quarters, dimes, nickels, pennies)
Instead of spending money on a family activity, plan a FUN family activity that doesn’t cost money. Then donate the money you would normally have spent.
Treasure Hunts are FUN! Go on a treasure hunt in your house (and car) search under the bed, in the sofa, on the dresser, under the seats. The treasure you are seeking is loose change.
SMILE Jar - Keep a jar in the kitchen to collect change for having FUN! Every time someone gets caught smiling - drop a penny in. If they are chuckling, collect a nickel, laughing collects a dime, and a good ol’ belly laugh collects a quarter. Have a contest - can you make someone else chuckle, laugh, or snort?
Maybe you and your family can think of some different ideas.
Then on Thursday, May 26, go to NBC and watch the Red Nose Day Special!
Yearbooks still available in front office for $35.

Speaking of Swimming...
The daughter of Jayne Wiliky, a kindergarten teacher here, will be working at a camp for homeless children this summer. They are in need of bathing suits for the campers, ages 6-14. The bathing suits do not have to be new, so if you have any at your home that your children have outgrown, please consider donating them. They need all different sizes, even adult sizes would work. You can send them into school any time before the last day. I know they would appreciate your help if you are able.
Order VS Chaos
It was interesting in that you could see the chaos creep in...first is was a light mist that swirled around their feet. But the chaos became more aggressive as we saw that we had missed our start time and now the 4th graders would have to wait and come back later. The chaos had now become a thick fog over the group as it dawned on the scholars that our carefully prepared show order and slideshow was no longer accurate (and 4 acts had gotten left off and needed to be fit in somewhere). Students started to panic that we wouldn't get it all done today...that they had costumes, props, and in some cases makeup...they HAD to perform today! All the while Mr. Boykin and Mrs. Fullhart were making sure that all of the 5th graders made sure to take time to eat lunch.
The Directors and Hosts worked with Mrs. Fullhart to rework schedule, the kids floated in and out of their jobs, the anxiety decreased and we ended up having a lovely showcase and saw all of the acts before we finished at 2:30!
Order leads to Chaos and Chaos leads to order!
