What you really need to know
We are putting a few new systems in place to share with you:
- We have two math backpacks that will be coming home to you on a rotating basis, courtesy of our Math Coach, Mrs. McKenna. When your child has their turn, the backpack will come home on a Monday and should be returned by the following Monday. I chose Monday because library books are due then, so I figured they could come back together :)
- You should have received a "sharing calendar" for October and November sharing dates. We will rotate through the months so each child gets one sharing day every 4-5 weeks to bring in a special item or story to share with the class. This is on a voluntary basis, no make-up dates. please!
End of the month heads up:
We will be celebrating Fall themed festivities in the classroom with a fun crafts day on a date TBD shortly. As Halloween has become ever so slightly controversial, we fully encourage kids to enjoy the holiday, if they choose, with you after school. At school we will keep it low key and plan to enjoy a pajama day in lieu of costumes on 10/31. We will still get to do fun stuff with spiders, cats, bats, scarecrows, pumpkins, and other assorted shenanigans. Yay! Simplicity and fun all rolled into one!!
If anyone has a hookup to a pumpkin source, we would gladly accept a donation of 24 mini pumpkins and/or two medium-large sized ones :) Let me know if you've got any squash connections up your sleeves.

All in a days work...
- Thanks to our Mystery Readers, Amanda and Isabella Levine, who shared on two different days! Keep those siblings coming. We love when they visit to show us how its done :)
- We are becoming experts at reading color words. We learned the story The Deep Blue Sea and worked on retelling its' many parts in order with our third grade buddies.
- Mrs. Martell came by with the iPad card to introduce us to a pattern block app. We will be learning the names of shapes and how smaller shapes can be put together to compose larger shapes.
- We are practicing oral storytelling, listening, and questioning to get at interesting details and ideas to write about during writer's workshop.
- In science we were introduced to our new mealworms and made some predictions about their upcoming metamorphosis. We have talked about animal habitats and used our mystery box figure out what is the biggest habitat of all, given a bunch of clues. Answer: The EARTH!
- We have added question of the day to our morning routine. The students have been responding to daily questions on a variety of topics. Recently we have focused on writing the beginning letter to match the initial sound of a picture. This will help us with penmanship and also to focus on identifying beginning sounds for reading and writing tasks.

The things kids say. For real.
Mrs. Cohen: What do you think this poem is about?
Student 1: Pete the Cat!
Mrs. Cohen: Let's have a closer look. Does it say I love my red shoes or Pete stepped in blueberries anywhere in here?
Students: *-*
Mrs. Cohen: Let's look for words we know.
Students 2, 3, 4, 5: Red!, Yellow! Green! Brown!
Mrs. Cohen: So what do you think this could be about?
Student 6: Leaves.
Mrs. Cohen: Yes! How did you figure that out?
Student 6: Because it says leaves right there.
