Riojas Elementary School News
March 4, 2019
School Hours: 7:35am-2:50pm
From the Principal
With Spring Break right around the corner, we are asking for your help in a strong finish all the way through Field Day! We have some fun events planned between now and then, but the most important thing is all the learning we are doing. Encourage your children to keep trying their hardest each day, help them get enough sleep and eat and drink plenty of healthy foods! Attitude is everything: Henry Ford's quote is one of my favorites. Let's think, "WE CAN!"
I hope to see you at school sometime soon,
Christi
Art and PE Info
Art to Remember - Art Fundraiser
Some of our students are participating in a creative fundraiser to support our Riojas Art program. Children have created colorful artwork and submitted it so parents can order a personalized piece showcasing a son's or daughter's artwork. Please look for your order form which would have come home last week. Orders will be due March 12th.
Field Day is March 14th!
Chilly weather is likely in the morning. We suggest you send your K-2 kids wearing a long sleeve shirt, gloves, and a cold weather knit cap or ear muffs. We will put their Field Day T-Shirt over their long sleeve shirt when they get to school. Later in the morning, when they get too warm, they can shed some of this and put these in their class’s wagon.
8:25 – 11:20 - K-2nd Field Day Meet under the car loop cover at 8:25 for instructions
11:45 – 2:30 - Grades 3-5 Field Day. Meet under the car loop cover at 11:45 for instructions.

From Pflugerville ISD Communications
Dear Pflugerville ISD Parents and Guardians:
It has come to our attention that a social media challenge directed at children and young adults called the “Momo Challenge” is causing concern for school districts across the country. While there have been no reports of this challenge in our community and the validity of the challenge has been questioned, Pflugerville ISD is urging parents to become aware of this challenge and monitor their children’s use of social media and the internet.
The “Momo Challenge” is just one example of dangerous “games” through social media that has a negative impact on students and their social interactions. This current concern serves as a reminder that continuous monitoring of your child’s digital security is critical at this time in our society.
Students are encouraged to contact their school counselor or utilize the district's Anonymous Alerts app with any questions or concerns regarding the “Momo Challenge” or other social media/internet threat.
What parents can do:
- Consider age appropriateness for children’s use of technology, time spent on social media and overall reminders of family expectations for making good choices.
- Ask your child if they know about the challenge and engage in conversations about safe technology use.
- Children should never respond to anonymous messages on social media and parents should advise their children to never share personal data, photographs or phone numbers on the internet.

Your child’s school counselors and administrative teams are aware of this most recent social media and internet concern and will monitor the situation in their buildings. Thank you for your time and attention to this important matter. As always, please contact your child’s school if you have any further questions or concerns. Together, we will continue to work to protect our children and foster a safe learning environment.

Changes In Going Home
If you are changing the way your child goes home, you must communicate that to the front office staff by stopping by the office or calling the office. Please do not send an email. Our teachers are busy teaching and helping students and often do not check their email throughout the day. The office communicates changes to our staff close to the end of the school day, but all changes must be reported to the office before 1pm. This helps us ensure a safe dismissal for all students.
