Congratulations JBE
The Let’s Move! Active Schools National Award is the top physical activity and physical education distinction for K-12 schools. The award celebrates a school’s commitment to integrating at least 60 minutes of physical activity before, during and after the school day as well as health and wellness education, and a commitment to healthy eating within the school.
“These schools are raising the bar by creating Active School environments where students are happier, healthier, and higher-performing. I am thrilled with their success through Let’s Move! Active Schools – they’re helping to create a new norm where physical activity is a fundamental aspect of a young person’s success both in the classroom and in life,” said First Lady Michelle Obama.
MONDAY, October 5th
On Monday, October 5th at 12pm we will have a Lunch and Learn with Dr. Wanda Greenfield. Dr. Greenfield serves as our school's Technology Integration Specialist. She helps our teachers and our students as we continually augment our instruction. Dr. Greenfield will be discussing Common Sense Media and ways you can keep you and your children safe with the increased use of technology in our society. Bring your lunch and join us for this interesting conversation.
After Dr. Greenfield is done, stay for our PTSO meeting. The PTSO meeting will begin at 1pm. We have many topics of discussion especially with Spooktacular and Boosterthon just around the corner.
School Improvement Council
The SC School Improvement Council was established some 30 years ago to provide assistance to schools in promoting and improving our state's public schools. This group of parents, school staff, and community members meet once a month. We currently have 3 open positions on the board. If you would like to be on SIC, please submit your name to Meredith Rose via email at mrose@spart7.org
FREE MONEY
I hope that got your attention!!! JBE's PTSO has several opportunities where they raise money without much hassle. The first is through box tops. I'm sure that you and your family have many of these on products in your home. Please cut them out and send them into school in a plastic bag with your child's teacher's name on the bag. We have competitions throughout the year. Additionally Sunny D's UPC codes can be sent in as well and teachers will receive books. In our front office we also have Publix cards. You can put these on your key chain and whenever you shop at Publix have them swipe your card. A percentage of your money comes right back here to JBE.

Reminders
As the weather starts to change, we remind you to write the name of your child in his/her coats and jackets. Our lost and found is starting to get very large and having a name in the items makes it easier for us to get the item back to the student rather than put in lost and found.
Bulldog Chorus has started. Bulldog Chorus is open to any student in grades 3-5. Rehearsals are held on Mondays from 2:30-3:30. Please have your child join us on Monday.
Tardies and Unexcused absences can have an effect on your child's academic performance. It is very important that your child is at school on time (7:50AM) each morning ready to learn for the day. If your child is sick, please send an excuse in with your child upon their return to school. Many times you can email or call and have assignments for your child waiting for you in the office. As always, students with more than 5 tardies or unexcused absences are not invited to our Top Dog Celebration at the end of each quarter.

ART
Our new art teacher, Ms. Louka, is very excited about the projects she has planned for our students this year. As a reminder please bring an oversized shirt to pull over clothes for your child to wear to art. Any oversized shirt will do but be sure to write your child's name in the shirt. Additionally Ms. Louka would love parent to volunteer in the art room. If you are interested, please email Ms. Louka at cmlouka@spart7.org
Ms. Louka will also take donations for the art room such as: arts and craft items or fabrics, paints (tempra, watercolor, acrylic) and patterned papers or art paper.
We recently finished an amazing art activity with all students in the school. Thanks to a generous PTSO donation artist Bob Dolster was at JBE for one week creating a unique sculpture for the grounds of JBE. Each child has his/her self portrait included in the art work. We hope to have this sculpture up very soon.
7Reads
Our school was visited last week by Chad Crews, author and magician, as part of Spartanburg School District 7's 7Reads program. Our students had an incredible time.
The program was featured on WSPA and the link to the story can be found here:
http://wspa.com/2015/09/30/magician-kicks-off-reading-program-for-district/
As part of the 7Reads program, a community event will be held on Tuesday, October 6th at 6pm at the Barrett Room of the Spartanburg Public Library.
You are all encouraged to attend.
