Implementing the ELPS in Mathematics
As part of the ELPS framework for English language learner (ELL) success, the foundation curriculum courses of the ELPS Academy stress the importance of implementing the ELPS in order to provide an environment conducive to the content acquisition and language development of English language learners.
This course is designed to show how implementing of the ELPS cross-curricular student expectations and linguistic accommodations promotes content and language acquisition in a mathematics lesson.
Grades K - 8 Supporting Information Documents Updated
**Updated May 2016
3(4)(K) Number and operations.
Supporting Information
SE 3(4)(K) builds to 3(5)(B). The focus of 3(4)(K) is on developing number-based strategies to solve multiplication and division problems within 100. This may include multiplying a two-digit number by a one-digit number. The product and dividend may be less 100, but no operand is limited to the multiplication/division facts.

Aligned with kindergarten TEKS, particularly in mathematics (e.g., geometry and addition and subtraction) and language arts and reading
Updated to clarify outcomes and to reflect current research and best practices in early childhood education
Sequenced the outcomes to reflect a developmentally appropriate continuum of instruction and learning
Replaced out-of-date references with more general references to technology
Updated instructional strategies
Added more differentiated outcomes for English language learners
Moved personal safety and health skills from the science domain to Domain IX, Physical Development, and renamed the domain Physical Development and Health
Added more examples in Spanish and included developmental markers for teacher reference

High School Prerequisites
Prerequisites for mathematics can be found in the TEKS for each course under general requirements.
The word “recommended” has been removed from most of the prerequisites.
A student has not completed Algebra I. Can they still enroll in Geometry (or other courses, such as MMA)? Algebra I is a required prerequisite for Geometry. A student must meet prerequisite requirements for each course. Texas Administrative Code §74.11 and §74.71 provide additional clarification on prerequisites. If a situation arises where §74.11(j) or §74.71(k) are appropriate, it is a local decision on the process the district would use to determine equivalent knowledge of a course.
Chapter 74.11(j) and Chapter 74.71(k)
A student may not be enrolled in a course that has a required prerequisite unless the student has successfully completed the prerequisite course(s); has demonstrated equivalent knowledge as determined by the school district; or was already enrolled in the course in an out-ofstate, an out-of-country, or a Texas nonpublic school and transferred to a Texas public school.
Commissioner Morath waives grade 5 and 8 student retesting and retention requirements
Even though state requirements have been waived, districts are still encouraged to use local discretion to determine on an individual basis whether accelerated instruction should be offered to support students. Districts will not be required to convene Grade Placement Committees but are encouraged to use all relevant and available academic information to make promotion decisions.
Morath said, “I apologize for the continuing problems our students and staff are being forced to deal with because of ongoing reporting issues with our testing vendor. Kids in the classroom should never suffer from mistakes made by adults. We intend to hold the vendor, Educational Testing Service, accountable.”
Normally, fifth and eighth-grade students must pass the reading and math assessments in order to be promoted. If a student does not pass the tests after three tries, the student must be retained unless a Grade Placement Committee, composed of a principal, teacher, and the student’s parents, unanimously agrees to promote the child to the next grade level. State law gives the commissioner the ability to waive this law when necessary.

Interactive Journals Grades 3 and 4
In this blended, online course participants will engage in practices to teach key math concepts through the use of interactive notebooks in order to promote literacy and make content-specific language accessible to all learners. Participants will have the opportunity to collaborate with peers each month in a digital environment, or video chat, as they implement interactive notebooks into their math classroom over the course of the school year. The participants will design tasks for their learners that build on students' prior knowledge, target possible misconceptions, and incorporate questioning techniques to engage students in critical thinking. There is a pre-session module on setting up your notebook that should be completed prior to the first video chat on August 17, 2016. Eighteen hours of CPE credit will be granted upon completion of the course.
