Principal's Message

Hello Hughes Community!

We had a fantastic Back to School Night this week. It was wonderful to see so many of our Owl parents and families on campus to meet teachers and staff. Thank you to our teachers for creating engaging and informative presentations. Thank you to our support staff for helping us prepare for the event, and thank you to our student council for welcoming our families with sidewalk chalk messages and helping with directions at BTSN. Back to School Night definitely was a #HughesProud moment.

On Friday, eighteen of our students attended the LBUSD Middle School Student Summit to share their voices on how our school district can best prepare them for their future. We are very proud of each of these students for representing Hughes so well! Next week, our school sports season begins with Volleyball and Flag Football and we are very excited to cheer for our students on the court and field.

Here are the highlights of this week's newsletter:

  • Classroom Highlights
  • Back to School Night Highlights
  • LBUSD Student Summit

Safely Crossing a Street

Big picture
All students should cross the street at a corner and/or crosswalk. It is also important to look both ways before crossing. Please remind your child of this important safety message and also, please be a cautious driver, aware of your surroundings, and student movement. Thank you!

If you are wanting additional crossing guards in the neighborhood, they are through the City of Long Beach, not LBUSD, and you would want to contact them with your request.

Hughes Guidelines for Success

At Hughes, we expect all our students to show RESPECT as part of our Guidelines for Success. Our students are expected to embody RESPECT both on and off campus since they are a representation of our school and community. Make us #HughesProud!

Hughes - A Green Ribbon School

We are reinstating our sorting stations in the lunch area at Hughes! As a Green Ribbon School, Hughes is a leader in sustainability and eco-friendly actions. We encourage all students to help keep our campus clean and green!

Reusable Water Bottles: We encourage all students to bring a reusable water bottle to stay hydrated and reduce our plastic waste.

Clean and Green: As a Green School, our students should not litter on or around campus. Please make sure that all items are thrown away and that we also pick up trash that we see when walking or sitting by it. When we ignore trash on the ground, we are saying that we are OK with trash on the ground, and that's not the Hughes way!

Walk, Bike, Carpool: To minimize the amount of CO2 we add to our environment as well as noise pollution from traffic, we encourage all our students to walk, bike, or carpool to school, when possible.

Join the Hughes PTA! Our goal is for our entire school community to be members!
