Why Candor and Politics Don't Mix
Politics is the major leagues of extemporaneous speaking. And in these days of 24-hour cable news, iPhones, Twitter and Facebook, there is no such thing as an offhand comment. Everything is recorded, distributed and dissected. Political campaigns, and the media covering them, are so fixated on flubs, no wonder every politician is in constant mortal fear of being held accountable for the slightest misstatement, malaprop, or misquote. But, of all the gaffes a politician can utter, none, it seems, is as damaging as a candid comment.
