Special Events This Week
As a launch to our new writing unit on opinions we are doing some launch activities:
- wear your favorite outfit or an outfit you really like
- students will be talking about why they like their outfit and providing reasons
Monday: Bring your favorite stuffed animal
- bring a stuffed animal to school on Monday
- students will be talking about why they like the stuffed animal and providing reasons
Writing
We are starting a new unit in writing on opinions:
- what are opinions
- fact vs. opinion
- brainstorming ideas
- planning our opinion writings
- writing our opinion and providing a reason
Reading
This week we are starting book clubs:
- Readers are effective partners or club members when we focus on who is talking and what is being said. This helps us to understand and respond appropriately.
- We plan for our reading meetings by choosing one part to explore and collecting information about that part.
Math
- reviewing the addition algorithms: quick tens, tape diagram, arrow method, decomposing
- reviewing greater than, equal to, less than
- reviewing equivalent ones and tens (i.e. 27= 2 tens and 7 ones; 1 ten and 17 ones; 27 ones)
- reviewing story problems
Science
Upcoming Principals' Coffee
Our next Lower Elementary Principals’ Coffee is scheduled for Tuesday, March 1 at 8:05am in the Elementary School Presentation room. Our Elementary Math Coordinator Mrs. Carol Little will be hosting a session to talk to parents about Math resources that can be used at home to reinforce classroom learning. Parents are encouraged to bring their laptops / iPads to access the resources being presented.
In the second half of this session we will hold our Parent Forum. If you have topics, feedback or questions that you would like to put forth for agenda consideration please e-mail Mrs. Ibrahim our Parent Forum representative at asdelementaryparentforum@gmail.com by 9:00am on February 28. Please specify in your communication, which division your child is in, as Mrs. Ibrahim represents both Lower and Upper Elementary.
Lower Elementary Math Drop In
Our Math Coordinator, Mrs. Carol Little will be holding a Lower Elementary parent drop in / office hour every Wednesday from 2:00 – 3:00pm. Mrs. Little will be available at this time every week to assist parents who need further information about our Math program or who would like help / suggestions with how to support their children at home. It will be held in Ms. Mindy Martin’s office.
