Fit and Lit Challenge
Dear Parents and Students,
Leawood Leopards understand the importance of healthy bodies and healthy minds.
What is the Fit and Lit Challenge?
The Fit and Lit challenge is an optional incentive program to motivate students to stay fit, to read a variety of books and to become familiar with the library. It encourages students to take the time to participate in recreational fitness and independent reading.
How does a student participate?
Starting in September students will receive a bingo card. The bingo card lists different fitness activities as well as categories for many different genres and types of literature. At the end of the month cards should be returned to the library.
How will students be recognized?
A student will be given a small token of recognition each month if he/she returns the completed the bingo card. Students are encouraged to still turn in cards even if they do not complete the entire card to accumulate points. Each bingo rectangle will be worth 1,000 points and students who have 100,000 points will be invited to a Fit and Lit Celebration in the spring. Our last Fit and Lit is due May 3rd and our celebration for students who have met the goal this year will be May 20th after school until 4:30. Invitations will be sent out May 7th.
The best reward
Leawood students will be smarter and healthier!

Enchanted Breakfast- 398.2 Challenge
We had a wonderful time celebrating the 398.2 Challenge. Thank you to Mrs. Lovsky, Dr. Ralston, Mrs. Baki, Ms. Yelliott, Mrs. Smith and of course the Fairy Godmother for making it so enchanted!
Poetry Challenge - Don't Panic- Go to 8-1-1 - Relax with a poem!
April is National Poetry Month and Leawood students are invited to celebrate poems and poets. It is time to go hunting for some very special poems in the library. If you succeed in one of the tasks listed below you will be invited to a Poetry Picnic. The picnic will be in May on a nice day in the outdoor classroom space during your lunch shift. You will bring your own lunch and we will have a special treat.
How do you get invited?
You may do one of these tasks:
1. Memorize poems. Poems must have a certain number of lines based on your grade level.
K-1st - One poem with six or more lines
2nd -3rd - One poem with twelve or more lines
4th -5th One poem with sixteen lines or more
Recite the poems to Mrs. Smith or Mrs. Lovsky in the morning before classes get started or at the very end of the day.
2. Put together a notebook of ten poems from different poets. You must include a haiku, a poem that describes nature, a funny poem, a rhyming poem, and a free verse poem that does not rhyme. Sorry these must be handwritten not typed. It does not matter how short or long the poems are, but you should include the title and poet’s name. Illustrate each poem and then turn in your notebook to the library.
Deadline: May 1st
Lost or Damaged Books
As the end of the year approaches remember if your child loses a book we will send you an overdue notice. Please search under beds, closets, backpacks, toy boxes and cabinets for the missing book. If you can not locate the book we will ask for payment to replace the book.
A book damaged by food, water or neglect will also have to be replaced. After payment the book will be removed from the library collection and given back to your child. Please encourage your child to be responsible.
Thank You... You may have heard...
It is with mixed emotions that I am officially announcing my retirement from public education. I have not made a big deal of it with the students because it is going to be very difficult for me to say goodbye to them. At the end of the school year I will have been an educator for thirty-four years. The last five at Leawood. Although I have had a lot of positions from classroom teacher, reading teacher and facilitator roles, I consider myself blessed to have served as the librarian at Leawood. I have seen the students grow as readers, seen them question and wonder, solve problems, create and build and use their imaginations. I hope that the programming and the library lessons your child participated in will motivate them to not only be lifelong learners but ultimately good citizens.
Thank you for your support and best wishes to you all. I will definitely miss my Leawood family.
Sincerely,
Kathy Smith
