RHJ Weekly Update

Career Exploration Opportunity at RHJ
The quiz is a 10-minute, daily self-discovery activity that serves students with a new set of question every day and becomes more personalized over time. This tool will help students explore post-secondary, labour markets, and career options, and match their interests to higher education and career pathways. We are excited for our students to see what is out there beyond high school!
Return to School
Students returned to school last week to in-person learning and did a fantastic job with mask wearing and following protocols! We are lucky to have such fantastic students!! Below are some of the notes from last week that are still in place this week to continue to protect the learning environment.
- Our staff will be doing their best to support your students, but we recognize there may be disruptions and challenges due to the pandemic. If you are connecting with our staff, please choose kindness as we are all doing our best in these challenging circumstances. Thank you in advance for your support.
- Anyone with symptoms, COVID-19 related or otherwise should be staying home until those symptoms are fully gone unless they are from a diagnosed pre-existing medical condition. The COVID-19 Daily Screening Questionaire needs to be completed each day before students attend.
- If students are staying home, please call the school (780-998-2216) or email (general.rhj@eips.ca) to let the school know along with the reason. If students are staying home due to illness, please share a brief explanation of symptoms.
- The isolation rules for individuals who test positive for COVID-19 have changed. For students that are double vaccinated, they are legally required to isolate for 5 days and then there are 5 days of further mask restrictions. For students that are not double vaccinated, they are legally required to isolate for 10 days. For further information, please see the Alberta Government website HERE.
- When students are away from school, assessments and work will be posted to Brightspace. Teachers will not be teaching both in-person and online, so students will need to follow along through Brightspace. However, students are able to reach out to their teachers with any questions.
- Extracurricular activites are starting back up. This includes basketball practices and rehearsals. Basketball games will begin January 24 if all goes well.
Masks, Rapid Tests, and Water Bottles
The Government of Alberta provided medical grade masks and rapid test kits for students arrived on Thursday and were handed out to students on Friday. Students are strongly recommended to use medical grade masks while at school. The school does not have many masks left, so it is important for students to bring their own masks to school daily.
The rapid test kits will be distributed to students to take home with them. The government is suggesting they be used twice a week.
A friendly reminder to please send your student with a water bottle to school daily. We are handing out a lot of masks and disposable cups to students for water, and it isn't sustainable. Thanks for you help with this!

Preparing for the World of Work
1. Career Pathways is designed to develop skills that students can apply in their daily lives when preparing for entry into the workplace or for further learning opportunities. Competencies achieved will allow students to make relevant connections with work and/or post-secondary training.
Each month Career Pathways distributes relevant planning material, presentation sessions, occupational spotlights, and other helpful information meant to support students and families. It is our hope students in Junior High begin to understand opportunities available to them and explore and reflect on a variety of experiences to help them plan their next steps. High School students continue to set goals and further develop the skills, knowledge and attitudes that increase their readiness to successfully transition beyond high school.

Returning Student Registration for 2022-23
Elk Island Public Schools (EIPS) will once again conduct an online returning student registration process to confirm student registrations for the 2022-23 school year. Families of all current students—with the exception of graduating Grade 12 students—must complete the process to confirm the school their child plans to attend in the 2022-23 school year or advise the Division of their plans not to return to EIPS. Additionally, students who want to attend a non-designated school need to make that request through the returning student registration process—acceptance is based on available space. The 2022-23 returning student registration takes place Feb. 1-28, 2022.
Access to the Returning Student Registration Form is provided through the PowerSchool Parent Portal. If you don’t have a PowerSchool Parent Portal account, you need to set one up before Feb. 1, 2022. Create a PowerSchool Parent Portal account
