GMS Principal's Corner

October 10, 2021

Dear Galvin Families,

We hope your weekend is going well. A reminder that tomorrow is a holiday and there is no school. It's hard to believe we are into October. These are excellent months for learning and getting back into routine. I hope you enjoy the beautiful fall weather. Please see the important information below for this week.

Thank you,

Mike Green

GMS Goes Gold

September was Childhood Cancer Awareness month and to show our support, GMS had a “Go Gold” Day. Our Student Leadership Council made and sold gold ribbons on Thursday, 9/30. The 2021 GMS Gold Day raised almost $450 that will be donated directly to "Maddie's Promise." More information about this charity can be found here: https://www.maddiespromise.org/the-promise. Thanks to everyone that participated.

ACTION REQUIRED! GMS Handbook Sign Off

We previously shared with families an electronic copy of the GMS Student and Family Handbook with the District Appendix. This Handbook is also posted on our school website. The link to this handbook can be found here: Approved GMS Handbook with Appendix.

It is the responsibility of each family to review the Handbook together and to fill out the 2021-22 Canton Public Schools Student/Family Handbook and Permissions Signature Page. The link to the Google Form can be found here. Please ☑ each section and electronically sign this form as receipt and agreement as stated below. We ask that you complete this form for each child you have at the Galvin.

We appreciate your attention to this matter.

Water Bottle Reminder

Students are reminded to bring their own refillable water bottle. We have several filling stations, but the traditional water fountains are still not accessible at this time and we do not have containers to hand out for the stations.

Students Enjoy Fit4Fund$!

The Galvin Fit4Fund$ Day was a huge success! Thank you to all Galvin families for your support of our students in school. The weather was perfect and students participated in a variety of fitness-based activities. More information from CAPT will be emailed out to parents next week.

Early Dismissal Procedures

As a reminder, if your child needs to be dismissed, please send them to school in the morning with a note. Your student should bring this note to Ms. Piana in guidance before heading to their first period class.

Following this procedure will allow us to have your child downstairs, ready for pickup and will get you on your way as quickly as possible. We understand unexpected emergencies arise during the day, but these should be the exception. In those instances, please come to the office door and ring the bell. We will have a form for you to fill out and will call your child down as efficiently as possible. However, please understand this will take some time. Thank you.

Picture Day October 13, 2021

A reminder that picture day is coming up this Wednesday, October 13, 2021. An extra picture order form for Chestnut Hill Studios is attached if needed.

Hispanic Heritage Month

Students and staff recognized Hispanic Heritage month in a variety of ways. During X Block, a multi-purpose block in our school day, the whole school participated in a two-day learning experience around Hispanic heritage, including listening to Latin music, watching a short video, and reading a Newsela article that shared various Hispanic and Latinx students’ experiences. Additionally, on Day 2 of the lesson, students participated in small and whole class discussions about what they learned.

One of our school-wide goals this year is to create learning opportunities that help us all see the vibrant cultures that surround us.

GMS Cross Country Update and Our Bulldog Scholars

Congratulations to the Cross Country team for winning both the girls and boys tri-meet yesterday against King Phillip Middle School and Foxboro Middle School. Lauren Rafeeto and Declan Monohan finished strong in first place in two very close races. Nora Giannacopoulous took 3rd and Elena Silva took 4th for the girls team. Kai Anand took 3rd, Colby Cormier took 4th and Riley Swearington took 5th for the Boys team. All members of the team had displayed huge improvements in their time and effort since the first meet! Great job to the Cross Country team!

The GMS Cross Country Bulldog Scholars are weekly performers who demonstrate hard work at practice and meets, exemplify sportsmanship, and respect the learning environment. Recipients are considered and chosen by the coaches each week. Students will be acknowledged each week throughout the season. Congratulations to this week's GMS Cross Country Bulldog Scholars: Tony Sfeir & Adileh Azar.

Clubs at GMS

Clubs began this week after school. Just as a reminder, all clubs will run after school for five weeks from 2:15p.m.-3:15p.m. A late bus is provided on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. Due to holidays or cancellations, makeup dates will be added and communicated through the club advisor. Only students staying after school for a club or with a teacher can take the late bus. Students cannot stay after school unsupervised.

Students who stay after school without permission will be directed to the office and parents will be contacted to pick them up.

First-Term Progress Reports

It is hard to believe that we are almost halfway through our first quarter. First-term progress reports will be accessible by the end of the day 10/12/21 through your PlusPortals accounts. The Progress Report is a snapshot of the academic average and grade of each student's classes at the 1/2 way point within the term. The Progress Report will show the Subject (class), Staff (teacher), numerical average, and current grade.

To access the Progress Report:

  • Log on to the PlusPortals.

  • Next to the student's name and picture click MORE.

  • In the green menu bar below select CLASSROOM.

  • Select PROGRESS REPORTS and click on COMBINED REPORTS.

As the school year goes on, all progress reports will be located in PlusPortals.

CANTON COVID Protocols

At a prior School Committee meeting updated COVID-19 Protocols were approved. Please click here to access them: Canton Covid-19 Protocols.

Attention: COVID Testing Health Update

Please click here to read an important update from our Health Office regarding the COVID testing program for the Canton Public Schools. It is important that all families read the update and take the appropriate action steps. Thank you.
