NAESP: Report to Parents - COVID-19: Keeping Children Healthy While School's Out
As we continue participating with Distance Learning, it is important to reinforce healthy habits, physical activity and social connections among our children. With this being such a stressful time for nearly everyone, be aware of how your children are coping with the current circumstances. They may have many questions, so determine how you might support their thoughts and ideas in positive ways. In this issue, NAESP's: Report to Parents shares ideas to help keep your child's mind and body active during this unique time. Please review their article, COVID-19: Keeping Children Healthy While School's Out.

Guess Who? - Butler Edition - Week 5 (Final Week)
For the month of May, Butler is excited to add some fun for our students! Click Here and see if your child will recognize some Butler Staff when they were CHILDREN. Students who get all 8-pictures correctly matched will be listed in the next newsletter (or follow-up email blast) to the community. If there are more than 10 students with 100%, the first 10 to complete the survey correctly will be listed. There will also be an overall winner at the end of May. Have fun and we look forward to seeing your guesses!
Butler Read Aloud Series - Final Listings
Butler Elementary Teachers and Staff have continued an ongoing Read Aloud Series for our students to enjoy listening to great literature and stories - be it before bed, when it is storming or on the weekends! CBSD Farmers Market - Wednesdays @ 4:00PM
The CBSD Farmers Market at Barclay was started a year ago by a small group of principals and teachers, collectively known as The Friends of John Barclay, with a mission to address food insecurity for children in the Central Bucks School District. Through the generosity of local organizations, including Bucks County Opportunities Council (BCOC), Philabundance, and Rolling Harvest, we distributed thousands of pounds of fresh produce to families and children at our monthly markets.
During the COVID shutdown, we quickly expand our operation, and we now distribute food every week on Wednesdays at 4:00 at Barclay Elementary School. Week to week, we share milk, eggs, fresh produce, and dry goods with over 200 CB families . We believe that in a community as well resourced as ours, no child should ever be hungry. We also believe that at some point in time, we all might need a little extra support, and we should feel confident in the compassion and empathy of our friends and neighbors.
Thank you to those who donate and we welcome anybody who needs support every Wednesday beginning at 4:00 PM - while supplies last.

District-Wide Field Day - June 5th
Field Day is one of our favorite days of the year. It is a day of celebration, fun, and fitness. In honor of our students and families, we have created a unique opportunity to stay connected as a school community by offering a Virtual Field Day. We are excited to offer this opportunity to our students and families, and we are grateful to have a variety of resources to support this day. All Field Day events are designed to be completed indoors or outdoors, using common household items. Our goal, this school year, is to provide family fun events to celebrate the end of the school year!
On Friday, June 5, students from all 15 elementary schools will have the opportunity to participate in the events of their choosing. We are encouraging students and family members to wear their school colors/ spirit wear for the events.
Be sure to take a picture in your Butler Gear - participating - and upload it to Mrs. Engart's SeeSaw page the week of Field Day!

School Happenings
Virtual Reading Olympics
What did we do when the Bucks County Reading Olympics Competition was cancelled? We hold our own CB Reading Olympics Competition- virtually!
On May 26 and 27, three teams of fifth and sixth grade Butler Reading Olympics participants, under the direction of our librarian, Mrs. Hanna, competed in six-rounds against other CB elementary school teams. The competition was held through Microsoft Teams. The Butler teams displayed excellent recall of the facts for the list of books they read, even though they had not had access to the books in months. Our Butler students also demonstrated exceptional teamwork and sportsmanship throughout each round of the competition.
A special thank you goes out to the CB Elementary Librarians for making this unprecedented virtual event possible.
Teacher Cleanout Week
It was an emotional time as each grade-level closed their respective "homes" - seeing everything as it was on that last day before the shut-down. Thanks to the teachers for organizing their classrooms amazingly well in a short turn-around and timeframe - and for everyone's efforts in preparing their rooms, walls and ceilings for the HVAC construction! One thing is clearly evident throughout the week, we miss our students dearly!

March Boomerang Award Building Winner
Eleanor's Nomination: Since Kindergarten, Eleanor has been participating in acting and improv classes at Lights, Camera, Acting! once a week for the past 3 seasons. For 3 hours a week, Eleanor took part in painting on canvas classes. And, was also involved in Science Explorers 1 time a week after school. Eleanor was interested in looking into a summer camp at the YMCA on how to cook, as well as, searching for sewing classes or singing lessons to continue her love for the arts.
Even through the shutdown, Eleanor is still active with Lights, Camera, Action! through Zoom where she is playing Wilbur in the Charlotte’s Web play which they will be creating a movie. She takes 1:1 singing lessons with a music student teacher, and has begun earning her inventors badge by creating her own baked goods or cooking interesting dishes through Girl Scouts, Troop 279.
Eleanor is one creative chick and that’s why she deserves to be nominated for Asset#17 Creative Activities!
April Boomerang Award Building Winner
Kayla's Nomination: Kayla Fokuo has been an avid reader since she was a 15-month old and by the time she was 2 had a vocabulary above average. Her love for reading morphed into writing and by the time she was 7 years old, was a published author.
Prior to the lockdown, she read 21 “Who was…” books in less than 3 weeks! In addition, she has made it a habit to continue leisure reading while in lockdown to keep her mind active. When she is not practicing Karate, playing the piano, clarinet or viola... - she is reading.
For example, for all of the month of April, she only watched one movie on the TV. She used her free time to read after her school work was completed.
Her love of reading has allowed her to gain a vast knowledge of information on several topics and makes conversations with her a joy.
I believe the Boomerang award will motivate her to keep reading and staying focused in this challenging time we find ourselves in.
