CSD Tidbits
Week of January 10-14, 2023
IMPORTANT SNOW MAKE-UP DAY INFO.
Friday, Jan. 20 - Professional Development Day for Staff Only (Note: this will not be a school day as previously announced. Snow make-up day will be 2/17/23 instead.)
RACING TO READ!!
On your mark... Get set... READ!! We are “racing to read” across South Dakota from January 9th to March 2nd. Readers across the state will accumulate miles by reading books to help our figurative Book Mobile race around the state. Students will use their current reading logs to keep track of time spent reading. We will make a paper chain to have a visual representation of how much we have read. We are in a friendly competition with the Custer County Library and YMCA to see who can read the most and build the longest chain. On March 2nd, Dr. Seuss’s birthday, we will have a party in the Pine Room at the Custer County Library to join our chains and celebrate all the reading our community has done together. Let’s get to reading!

Teachers who bring students to the state competition are paid a stipend and reimbursed for travel expenses. The state champion and teacher (or another chaperone) will receive an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C., in the spring for the Poetry Out Loud National Finals, where they compete with other state champions for a $20,000 cash prize. Student video submissions are due Feb. 20. Learn more on the SD Arts Council’s Poetry Out Loud webpage.
