Ripon Cathedral School Update
Week ending Friday 24th September 2021
Learning Beyond the Classroom
Year 4 raft building and bouldering at brimham rocks
On Wednesday, Year 4 had an absolutely amazing time at Bewerley Park, where they worked together in teams to build rafts. They found tying the ropes extremely difficult but they worked together fantastically. We are pleased to say that all the rafts were successful. Phew! This didn’t stop them from getting wet though. As we were heading back to shore, the children thoroughly enjoyed jumping in and walking their way back to land.
The other half of the day was spent at Brimham Rocks. The site was filled with determination and courage as the children climbed rocks and squeezed through the tiniest of holes. They encouraged each other along the way and helped one another with every challenge. We are very proud of them all.
Year 3 go canoeing and treasure hunting at Bewerley
We also learnt how to canoe which all the children thoroughly enjoyed. We participated in lots of games on the lake including; fetching balls, a scavenger hunt (one group found a welly!) and races around the island. The centre staff taught the children about the ways that a canoe can be paddled and how team work is needed to ensure that the canoe goes in the right direction. After learning the basics the children had the chance to play some games and get a little bit wet!
Year 3 were a real credit to the school and were fantastically enthusiastic all day!
Sports Captain Elections 2021
Year 6 did a great job at putting together their speeches about why they should be chosen as a captain for their team. They also worked together to film their speeches which were edited together and shared with the whole school on Thursday.
Team members for Sharks, Tigers and Dragons in every class then voted for who they would want to represent them. The results of the election were announced in our Friday Worship to the whole school.
Well done to our newly elected Sports Captains. But as you will see in the film above they all did brilliantly well!
Our fantastic candidates
Teddy Bear tea Party in reception
This week in Reception the children have been learning about how they have grown and changed from when they were a baby and have enjoyed finding out about how we each celebrate birthdays. The children decided they would like to hold their own party, so they each wrote to their favourite teddy inviting them to come to a Teddy Bear Tea Party! They have baked (and eaten!) birthday buns, made repeating pattern party hats, played phonics and maths-based party games, learnt to sign the Happy Birthday song and have learnt about the 12 months of the year. A very big thank you to the families of our Reception children who have kindly sent a gift of a small donation which will go to the Special Care Baby Unit in Harrogate for the wonderful work that they do.
School Update
On Tuesday I was lucky enough to have the privilege to go on the Year 3 visit to Bewerley Park, which was a wonderful day of learning, collaboration and fun. It was great to see how well the children interacted and I know the staff at Bewerley were impressed with our Year 3 and our Year 4 children who visited on Wednesday. They commented on how the children work with such confidence, independence and are often very resilient. We are very lucky to work with such enthusiastic children who clearly enjoy the breadth of the curriculum that we aim to deliver.
Covid Update
There have been a number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 within our Year 5 class. As a result we responded promptly and put in additional measures at the start of the week to ensure that classes do not mix during the school day. We also have kept in close contact with Public Health who have confirmed that our measures and response is appropriate and in line with DFE guidance.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank the parents and carers of our Year 5 children who have helped to keep us informed and responded to the advice from school and Public Health. As a staff we really do appreciate the supportive comments and understanding that has been shown over the week.
This week has clearly evidenced that it is very important that parents and carers do ensure that PCR tests are accessed when children have symptoms, even if they are mild. Prompt action does help to protect everyone in our school family.
Below is guidance provided by Public Health regarding symptoms, tracing and isolation.
Kind regards

Covid Guidance from NYCC Public Health
Schools are no longer expected to identify the close contacts of cases of COVID-19 (unless in very exceptional circumstances) - this is done by the national Test and Trace system.
Children who are close contacts of someone with COVID-19 are no longer required to isolate unless they develop symptoms. However they are advised to get a PCR test, and they are at a higher risk of developing COVID-19 in the days after the contact. They do not need to isolate while they wait for the result, unless they have symptoms.
Your child should continue to attend school unless they develop symptoms of COVID-19 or are unwell. If they do develop symptoms, please keep your child at home and book a PCR test for them.
The 3 main symptoms of COVID-19 remain a fever (temperature 37.8OC or higher), a new continuous cough, or a change to/loss of taste or smell. However, other commonly reported symptoms of the Delta variant include headache, sore throat, tiredness, and cold-like symptoms, so please be aware of these as well and stay at home and seek testing if you are in any doubt.
